While it never quite reached the transcendent heights of the other Canadian sketch comedy show, SCTV, The Kids in the Hall still distinguished itself with its laid-back outrageousness; indeed, most of the comedy here works because no one’s trying too hard (a bad habit of Saturday Night Live). Also, more often than not, the Kids knew when to end a sketch — rarely did a joke get stretched for too long (another bad habit of SNL). The Kids had their weaknesses, too, and the rampant cross-dressing sometimes got tiresome, but these zany surrealists always swung for the fences — and sometimes managed to hit some jaw-dropping home runs.
