Fans of the two most popular comic book superheros of all time can breathe a sigh of relief that things seem to be moving in the right direction for new Batman and Superman films.
Directer/writer Christopher Nolan, who’s new film Inception opens in July, elaborated with Empire magazine on the idea of making new movies centered around the man of steel and the dark night. Nolan probably will not be directing a new Superman film, but will certainly be a strong creative force in its creation. “What it is, while David Goyer
and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago – you know, thrashing out where we might move on from ‘The Dark Knight’ – we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said, ‘ By the way, I think I know how you approach Superman,’ and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I had been able to conceive of how you would address Superman in a modern context. I thought it was a very exciting idea.”
Even better, Nolan said that Warner Bros loved the pitch for the film as well. Which isn’t surprising, considering how much money The Dark Knight made, Nolan can basically do as he pleases in Hollywood.
And while Nolan hasn’t officially signed on to direct the new Batman film, fans of his previous two Batman films can keep their fingers crossed. “My brother is working on the screenplay. We came up with a story that we are very excited about. But ultimately it always comes down to the script, and can we make a great film from this? That’s something I will firmly be turning my attention to figuring out fairly soon.”
One of the biggest challenges facing the conception of a new Superman movie will be figuring out if Superman can exist in the same world as Batman. It worked in the D.C. Comics, but is it possible to take that concept, bring it to film and not lose the essence of the characters? If anybody can do it, you can, Chris Nolan.
