What’s New In Games This Week

It’s a big week, with not just tons of new releases, but some controversial ones as well. You’ve got a zombie game with all sorts of hype, all because of a single trailer with sappy piano music. Followed by another Ubisoft release that has their ridiculous DRM scheme behind it. Plus, yet another attempt at enlightening the knuckle-dragging, video game playing masses of the more popular tabletop gaming franchises.

Dead Island

This is it, time to see if the game lives up to the hype. From out of nowhere, Dead Island made a huge splash from its rather bold and disturbing (as well as pulling at the heart strings) trailer. As soon as details began to seep in, some went “Oh great, another game about killing zombies, yay…”, while others exclaimed “Another game about killing zombies? On a tropical resort island? Sweet!” While it more than likely won’t pack the emotional punch of the teaser, hopefully the change of scenery might be enough to get those a bit tired of the undeaad, though more importantly, hopefully the folks behind the game actually take advantage of their golden opportunity as well. Driver: San Francisco

Its been a while, but the Driver franchise is back, courtesy of Ubisoft this time, though the same folks behind the previous three installments are behind this one as well. It’s actually a direct sequel to part three, though hopefully many of the problems with that game have been left in the dust. This time around, not only are you driving the streets of San Fran, as the title implies, but you’re essentially roaming GTA territory as well, but with a more open world, sandbox feel to things. Though controversy is also the name of the game, with Ubi’s DRM scheme for the PC version being the reason for many headlines in recent weeks. Point being: go with the console versions this time around, k? Xbox 360, PS3, Wii

Resistance 3

The shoot out between this fall and winter’s FPS heavy hitters officially begins with the release of the third chapter of the Resistance saga. Most of you should know the deal by now: it’s an alternate take on the past, in which aliens have changed the course of history since World War 1. In part 3’s case, the exact year is 1957 and the Chimerans have taken over America. Once again, you assume the role of Joseph Capelli, trying to fill Nathan Hale’s shoes from part 2, till his untimely demise. Aside from the plot, the real story here is even beefier multiplayer, and support for both PlayStation Move and 3D displays. PS3

Star Fox 64 3D

Guess it’s that time again to once more justify your 3DS purchase. If you’ve saved the kingdom of Hyule twice already, how about being a hero to the Lylat System? Star Fox 64 3D is yet another N64 groundbreaker (it was the first game to use force feedback, among several other innovations) with plenty of modern day flourishes, like using the system’s gyroscope to control your Arwing, plus enhanced multiplayer. Still, at its heart is the game you loved as a kid (or in college, depending on how old you are). Which means the same awesome scenery and level designs, the same white-knuckle space shootouts, and the same sound of that stupid Toad constantly begging for attention or help. 3DS

[BoxTitle]Warhammer 40K: Space Marine[/BoxTitle] [WatchTrailer]http://heavy.com/games/games-videos/game-trailers/2011/09/warhammer-40k-space-marine-game-trailer/[/WatchTrailer] [BuyNow]http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-Warhammer+40k+Space+Marine[/BuyNow]

What happens when you take the classic tabletop war-game and infuse it with some Gear of Wars-like sensibilities? Why, you get Space Marine, the very latest video game adaptation of the Warhammer 40K universe. For years there’s been attempts at expanding its userbase and this might be the golden ticket it has long waited for. While there are definitely traces of its real-time tactical roots, the focus is on a combination of shooting and melee combat. Though unlike similar titles, there is absolutely no cover system. Then again, one look at your giant tin suit should tell you that you’re a talking tank. Yet much remains the same, like getting rid of that Orc menace yet again. It’ll be interesting to see how longtime fans of the franchise react to this latest experiment. After-all, that previous attempt of a football title was a nice try, yet I doubt it got any extra sweaty bodies into the local Games Workshops on a Friday night. PC, PS3, Xbox 360
