What’s New In Games This Week

Okay, so the 3DS finally has an original title worth bragging about, and the convergence of Batman and Team Fortress 2 looks mighty tight as well. But seriously, it’s all about The Simpsons, back when they were funny! And back when they had a video game that was worth giving a damn (and all the quarters in your pockets).

This is it, the day all 3DS owners have been waiting for: a game worth getting for the system that is NOT a port of an older title! According to the very folks who made it, Revelations could have easily been considered a proper installment of the franchise (not sure why it wasn’t), and by the looks of it, it definitely appears to be a real deal RE. It stars Chris and Jill, the two that got the zombie killing ball rolling oh so many years ago; now in fine 3D form. And the setting actually sounds scary, which hasn’t been the case for the series in a long time: a tanker in the middle of the ocean where the water is choppy and there’s undead roaming below the decks. The only question is how well it’ll control by itself or if that goofy second circle pad will be necessary. 3Ds

Gotham City Imposters

After a bit of delay, the Batman game in which you are not Batman is finally here. The premise is simple: you’re either a big fan of the caped crusader or you’re not (and by default, that makes you a fan of his arch nemesis, the Joker). Along with your fellow fanboys and girls decked out in colors that indicate one’s allegiance, you primarily just beat the crap out of each other. It’s essentially Team Fortress with a DC Comics sheen. Maybe not so much with the class attributes, but everything else: art style, sense of humor, an emphasis on the team based, first person gameplay. It’s just the out of left field concept that does a franchise good (not that a third Arkham game, somewhere down the road would be a bad thing). However, Gotham City Impostors will help make the wait all the more bearable, especially since the former game has yet to be announced. PS3, Xbox 360

The Simpsons Arcade Game

Most Simpsons video games flat out suck, that’s a given. Why? Well, aside from the fact that most are indeed shoddily constructed, there’s also one simple fact in life: anything that isn’t the original, early 90s quarters munching classic, simply cannot compete. It’s up there with TMNT: Turtles In Time. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the same folks worked on both games, given that they were both side scrolling Konami brawlers from the same era. Kids today don’t know how lucky they have it; back in the day, almost every licensed game sucked. Except this one. It’s fun to play and does the source material justice (even more so than many of today’s licensed titles). And for years, a version for home system was not possible due to wacky rights and clearances. Which apparently took 20 years to clear up. But trust me, the wait was TOTALLY worth it and no quarters needed this time. PS3, Xbox 360
