What’s New In Games This Week

This week demonstrates that old dogs still know a few new tricks, plus lots of people still own a Nintendo DS…

For whatever reason, many last gen favorites have taken their sweet time to make reappearances on “next” / current gen consoles. With the most recent example being Twisted Metal. Well, the latest to arrive late to the party is SSX (sorry, that one off for the Wii doesn’t really count). And as one might expect, this latest reboot adds some new flavor to the original formula, mostly in the form of a more realistic take on things. Instead of make believe locals, you’ll be gliding the slopes of real deal locations, plus things will be more open-world in general. Don’t expect GTA-levels of freedom, but you can expect fewer invisible walls. As for returning faces, all your faves are back (though the only one that most truly care about is Elise). Regarding new ones, there’s… Conan O’Brien? PS3, Xbox 360

Binary Domain

What happens when a team that is mostly known for vividly illustrating the life and times of a Japanese gangster is asked to tackle a future in which flesh covered humans aim to wipe out humanity? The result is Binary Domain, which sort of looks like Gears of War meets The Terminator with a Japanese-style that’s been getting rave reviews back in its homeland. One of its key features is its “Consequence System”. Helping out a squad member will not go unnoticed, and actually has deep ramifications as it pertains to the overall gameplay and story. You can even talk to the characters and direct their actions… we’re talking about artificial intelligence for the single player mode! PS3, Xbox 360

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

What’s this, a DS recommendation amidst the 3DS and Vita? Yup. Many have wondered why the sequel to one of the best DS games three years ago isn’t making an appearance on more modern hardware. Though one can only assume that it’s been in the oven for a long time. Which is yet another reason why it’ll be just THAT much better. Anyhow, much like before, you’re some Tokyo teen in the middle of a demon insurrection and only you and your pals can stop all hell from breaking loose. The ticking clock will constantly be a headache, but you’ll still find the time to enlist the aide of demons for hire. Something new to the formula is how other bands of kids are apparently on the same mission. And you just know some will be cool, and some will be not. DS
