Emeli Sande Breaks ‘The Beatles’ Record For Debut Album

Beatles Record Broken

Scottish singer Emeli Sande broke the longstanding UK record for the top debut album, which has been held by The Beatles for almost 50 years, reports The Independent.

Sande’s first album, Our Version of Events, is entering its 63rd consecutive week in the UK’s top 10, the longest of any other before it. The record was held by The Beatles, whose album, Please Please Me, spent 62 weeks in the top 10 in 1963 and 1964.

“It feels quite surreal to even have your name mentioned in the same sentence as The Beatles,” Sande said upon hearing the news. “For a record to stay there for so long it means that people have connected with it so that’s how I’m enjoying celebrating this record.”

The new singer, a 26-year-old former medical student, released the album in February 2012 and her career skyrocketed. Sande sang at the opening and closing of the 2012 London Olympics and won best British female artist and best album at the BRIT Awards.

Her next goal is to tackle the United States.

“I’m really excited about taking music over to the States because it’s a brand new challenge. There’s different formats over there so you have to understand the market, the people, you really have to take into account how massive the place is. It’s a brand new adventure and it’s chapter two of this whole big thing.”
