Forget the music festivals this year with their overpriced tickets, long lines and 100% lack of air conditioning. The only show you should be concerned with seeing isn’t music at all, but comedy with one of stand-up’s greats – Dave Chappelle.
Dave Chappelle will be co-headlining a 5 weekend tour this summer with some of comedy’s biggest “almost a household name” comics. The tour is called the Funny or Die Presents The Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Tour and will hit cities across the U.S. Here’s what you need to know…
1. This Will Be Chapplle’s First National Tour in Almost a Decade
Chappelle’s Show ended in 2006 and ever since then Dave’s kept a pretty low profile. His last stand-up special For What It’s Worth in 2004 was the last solid dose of Dave fans have gotten. He did some touring with Eerykah Badu around the time of his documentary Dave Chappelle’s Block Party in 2006, but for the most part Dave’s been enjoying family life out of the limelight.
2. He’s Been Popping Up with Big Name Comics to Perform Recently at Impromptu Shows
Dave’s been doing a smattering of relatively impromptu shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City over the last year but nothing on a full-tour scale. Rumors of a new tour first kicked up in February after Dave joined Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Marlon Wayans, and Bill Bellamy at the NY’s Comedy Cellar. If you were in that audience consider your life complete.
3. The Tour Will Include Other Supporting Acts on the Brink of Big Name Success
The tour will not only include the man himself, but a bevy of other heavy hitting comics on the brink of “household name” success. Comedy/Musical act Flight of the Conchords will be joining him along with Al Madrigal, Brody Stevens, Chris D’Elia, Demetri Martin, Hannibal Buress, Jim Jefferies, John Mulaney, and Kristen Schaal.
4. The Tour Will Also Include Two Side Stages
In addition to comedy, audience members will also get their fill of weirdness ( it is called the Oddball & Curiosity Tour after all) with two side stages of oddity. These stages will offer up street performers, psychics, and various other freak show performers.
5. The Tour Hits the Road August 23rd
The tour launches in late August in Austin, Texas and runs through September 22nd in Phoenix, Arizona. During its run the comedy fest will make stops in:
Austin, TX 8/23, Houston, TX 8/24, Dallas, TX 8/25, Pittsburg, PA 8/30, Tinley Park, IL 8/31, Detroit, MI 9/1, Camden, NJ 9/6, Holmdel, NJ 9/7, Mansfield, MA 9/8, Denver, CO 9/13, Irvine, CA 9/15, Mountain View, CA 9/20, Phoenix, AZ 9/22.
Tickets go on sale Friday, June 21st. If you’re looking to see Dave only, he’ll be on tour in the Southeastern U.S. throughout June. Tix here.
