On Valentine’s Day, for those who don’t want to watch a romantic chick flick, Vampire Academy will be in theaters with a bloodsucking vengeance. Zoey Deutch plays Rose Hathaway alongside Lucy Fry in the movie based on the popular book series. Here’s what you need to know about the 19-year-old actress.

1. Her Mom is Actress Lea Thompson

Thompson is married to film director Howard Deutch and has two daughters, Zoey and Madelyn.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the mother-daughter pair shared the screen in ABC Family’s Switched at Birth.

Thompson, who is known for her role in the three Back to the Future films, told Collider about being a working mother.

I’ve always been interested, but I’ve been a mother for 20 years. Directing is a big deal, and I really needed to save whatever energy I had left, after acting, for my kids. But, now that they’re older, it’s easier. Kind of like motherhood, your kids learn more from how you do things than what you tell them. They learn more from example then you even think they do.

2. She’s Dating an Actor

Her boyfriend, Avan Jogia , currently plays the lead role in the ABC Family series Twisted.
Before the premiere of Vampire Academy, she tweeted this,

Just Jared asked her about romance in her life, and she answered,

I feel like a very romantic person in all aspects, not just the one specific thing that most people would think, which is in dates. With relationships, I try to do little things that are romantic like this morning, I made breakfast in bed. I don’t know, I try to do nice things all the time.

3. She’s Playing a Book Heroine in ‘Vampire Academy’

The movie is based off the popular young adult series of the same name by Richelle Mead.

The days on set lasted up to 17 hours, and Deutch still managed to socialize on weekends.
She told Just Jared,

So I was working 16, 17 hours a day for four months including night shoots while being aware of everything, being hyper. And then I made sure that I would go out on weekends to maintain a stable and happy mind opposed to just working all the time. I was exhausted, so I can’t really think of one specific instance, but it was a great experience overall, for sure.

Teen asked her if she read the book series in preparation for her role, and she answered,

I haven’t read all of them, but I kind of made that a conscious decision to do so just because, as annoying as this may sound — I assume as most actors do — I have a fear of anticipation when I’m acting, so when you have the gift of owning perhaps six of your character’s diaries essentially, it can be a little bit over-stimulating, and therefore I might anticipate certain things.

Since the movie is about vampires, the film required many night shoots, which the actress came to enjoy. She said,

What’s even weirder, I felt like I was supposed to be there. I felt, like, totally happy and content and fine with adjusting to night shoots and being away from home for four months.

4. Ironically, She Played ‘Vampire Slayer’ Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Daughter

Ironically enough, she is in a movie about vampires, and played Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s daughter in Ringer.

The animal lover dished to Just Jared about her many pets.

Yeah. I have horses, chickens, koi fish, an African grey parrot, a Maine Coon cat, a bunch of rescue dogs, a desert tortoise, and a giant bunny rabbit creature. It’s funnily enough, the most difficult out of all the animals to take care of, so high maintenance. His name is Samson, I rescued him from a music video shoot I was doing. Not rescued it, but I just took it home.
