In a mini-Scandal of sorts Kerry Washington welcomed baby Isabelle Amarachi Asomugha two weeks ago, and the actress and her former-football star husband managed to keep the secret.
The couple is used to keeping secrets. After all, in 2013, they pulled off a wedding without the media knowing.
TMZ reported that the 37-year-old gave birth on April 21.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Washington Secretly Gave Birth 2 Weeks Ago
According to TMZ, the birth took place on April 21 in L.A.
A source also confirmed to Us Weekly, “Kerry recently had her baby.”
Her due date was a few weeks ago. Before the baby was born, Washington’s costar Columbus Short, joked:
I think Kerry Washington’s baby is going to come out fully able to speak at Scandal pace. The baby’s going to come out with just a white coat with the collar popped.
2. Isabelle Traveled in Hollywood Circles Before Being Born
The baby’s made a pre-birth debut at the 2014 Golden Globes.
That night, Washington told Ryan Seacrest:
I feel like I have the best date of the night. My little accessory tonight.
Shonda Rhimes, creator of Scandal, threw the actress a baby shower in her backyard, with costar Darby Stanchfield and Jane Fonda in attendance.
Fonda even blogged about the afternoon, gushing:
Yesterday I went to a friend’s baby shower. I hadn’t seen her since she was pregnant and when I saw her belly and her radiant face I began to cry.
According to People, the party was garden themed. Since the guests did not know the gender of the unborn child, they wrapped gifts in yellow, pink, blue and green.
3. Kerry’s Baby Bump Was Hidden on ‘Scandal’
As we know, Olivia Pope was not with child on the show.
The actress told the Hollywood Reporter, “The decision of whether or not a character would be on a similar journey, I had nothing to do with that decision.”
Therefore, Rhimes and costume designer Lyn Paolo had a little challenge on their hands.
Many media outlets published content around the seemingly ridiculous ways the pregnancy was kept off the show.
The Wire did an entire article on all the objects and people used to cover her pregnant stomach.
Some were a big coat, Fitz’s knee, and chairs.
TV Guide also weighed in, saying:
Since Scandal opted not to write in Kerry Washington’s pregnancy, Shonda Rhimes & Co. have come up with interesting ways to handle Bump Gate.
People listed lamps, phones, pillows, and even binoculars amongst the concealers. The magazine joked:
The real scandal at the heart of the spring’s half-season is the disappearance of star Kerry Washington’s ever-growing baby bump, which the show’s producers have attempted to hide with the worst cover-up the show has ever seen.
4. It Was a Challenge for the Actress
It’s been an awesome challenge for me as an actor because so much of how I access character is through my body. It’s definitely been complicated to say the least. I’ve learned a lot about other ways to access Olivia and be her.
She credited the show’s team for helping her out, saying, “I feel very grateful that we have such an amazing team that was able to protect the character within the context of what the actress was going through.”
Stanchfield thought that Washington handled her pregnancy on set with grace. She said:
She’s already a mom. She already mothers all of us. She’s very Olivia Pope to us, making sure we’re all taken care of and happy. She’s really glowing. She’s really happy. She’s genuinely so looking forward to this moment, so it’s fun to share in it with her.
5. The Baby’s Dad is a Former NFL Star
Washington married Nnamdi Asomugha in July of 2013. Asomugha played for the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers, and for a time was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the league.
Washington and Asomugha manage to maintain a very private relationship. In fact, the first time they were photographed together in public was at the January 12th Golden Globes.
TMZ learned that Nnamdi signed the little one’s birth certificate more than a week after she was born.
