With Season 9 of America’s Got Talent just around the corner, Spice Girl Mel B will be plastered all over our TV screens. The ex-pop singer may be good at keeping out of the limelight (except for her little romance with Eddie Murphy a few years ago), but there’s a lot about the singer you’ll want to know before watching this season.
1. Her Three Daughters Have Three Different Dads
Mel B is the mother of three girls, Madison, Phoenix and Angel. The father of her first child, Phoenix Chi, is Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar. In Gulzar and Brown’s highly publicized divorce, Gulzar won custody of their daughter.
Eddie Murphy is the father of Mel’s second daughter, Angel, though the debate over whether Eddie was actually the father was the subject of tabloids for months. In June 2007, People reported the results of the court-ordered paternity test and confirmed that Murphy was the father, though the two had separated at the end of 2006.
Stephen Belafonte is Brown’s current husband and the father of her third child, Madison.
2. ‘I Want You Back’ Hit No. 1 in the UK
“I Want You Back” marked Mel’s entrance into the solo music world. The single was released in 1998 as part of the film Why Do Fools Fall in Love and climbed to No. 1 in the UK singles chart instantly. The former Spice Girl was dubbed Mel B to distinguish herself from her co-band member, Melanie C.
3. She Had A Reality Show
Does It’s a Scary World ring any bells? Probably not, since it was the name of Mel’s reality TV show that only lasted for one season. The show revolved around her relationship with Stephen Belafonte.
4. She Wrote a Book
In 2002, Mel B released an autobiography titled Catch a Fire. Though the book received mixed reviews, it reached No. 7 on the UK books chart. Shortly after its release, Brown acted in her first British drama, Burn It, and then in her first horror film, LD 50 Lethal Dose.
5. Simon Wants Her in the UK
Multiple sources say creator Simon Cowell is keen on signing Mel B as a judge for the next season of the UK’s X-Factor. If Brown confirms, she will be judging alongside Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh and Simon himself. Word on the street is that Simon’s having issues finding a replacement for ex-judge Sharon Osbourne, and he thinks Mel would be the perfect fit. Some sources claim Mel has already denied the offer, but that has yet to be confirmed.
