John & Kelsey, ‘Catfish’: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

MTV Shows

On this week’s episode of MTV’s Catfish, John is in search of his online love Kelsey. Find out the story of John and Kelsey here.

1. The Two Met In a Chat Room

John H. from Detroit is an IT guy who’s been in an online relationship with “Kelsey” for about a year. The two met in a chat room and began chatting for hours together. Though John says Kelsey is in fact his girlfriend, the two have never met.

What’s a bit disturbing is that Kelsey’s screen name in the chat room was Kelsey Beelzebub. The name Beelzebub is known in Christian demonology as one of the seven princes of Hell and is referred to as another name for the Devil. Max points this coincidence out to John.

2. John’s Love Turns Out to Be a Guy Who’s a “Joker”

John says he’s getting out of IT because he’s burnt out, heading to San Diego. Before John moves, he wants to know if Kelsey is “with him” or wants to move on with her life.

One giant red flag that John has ignored has been that Kelsey’s gotten him to buy her things – $6,000 worth. While John is a very intelligent guy, Max says, “Love makes you dumb.” And, it certainly does …

Kelsey turns out to be a guy who was just having fun and used photos from a girl from the high school he went to … He says he’s actually “catfished” 30-40 people. He says he does care about the girlfriend he has in the cat room group. He says his relationship with Ellie is real, though all the others is fake. Kelsey calls himself the joker and the “king of Catfish.” Max gets angry and puts down his camera, refusing to continue to film Kelsey.

Kelsey was actually disappointed with John’s reaction because he was hoping he’d actually get very angry. And, Kelsey is actually Adam.

When the Catfish crew regroups and meets up with Adam again, he says that he’s really not such an evil guy. He said that he saw John as competition in the chat group and that’s why he did what he did. He also catfished other guys for the same reason.

3. The Fake Kelsey Is “Too Insecure” to Video Chat

John has only heard Kelsey’s voice during his initial conversation with “her.” From that point on, their conversations were strictly messaging. Kelsey says she’s too insecure to video chat with John, which makes John suspicious. Plus, Kelsey doesn’t seem to have Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media accounts.

John insists that Kelsey’s insecurity comes from a disorder called body dysmorphia. The textbook definition of this disease is:

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD, also known as body dysmorphia, dysmorphic syndrome; originally dysmorphophobia) is a chronic mental illness, wherein the afflicted individual is concerned with body image, manifested as excessive concern about and preoccupation with a perceived defect of their physical appearance.

This should have tipped off John right away, but he was blinded by love.

4. John Once Sent Kelsey a Dick Pic

When Nev and Max ask John if he’s ever engaged in sexting with Kelsey, he shocks Nev by saying, “I sent her a dick pic once.” Nev’s reaction is pretty funny as he smacks himself in the face with his own hands. John says he didn’t include his face in the explicit photo, but Kelsey never sent him a photo in return.

After confronting the real Kelsey, he laughed about the picture and says he deleted it right away. Kelsey was thrilled at how much he fooled John.

Max, Nev and John pull up to what they believe is Kelsey’s address and they arrive in a residential area, but where the house should sit is an empty lot.

John and the Catfish crew fly to Orlando where Kelsey supposedly lives, but they do not find what they initially came for … When they message Kelsey wondering where she is, she says that she was basically testing them and that she’s at a nearby cafe. They pull up to the cafe address and it’s not a cafe. It’s actually a casino … and they find Kelsey here. Kelsey spends all his time playing at the casino.

Since the show, Adam moved, deactivated the “Kelsey” account, and reveals that he and his girlfriend Ellie were able to move past his catfishing. As for John, he has a girlfriend in Illinois and he’s forgiven Adam.
