Phaedra Brothers and Hakim Isler are participants on Naked And Afraid, toughing it out in Northern India. Check out the facts on both of them and enjoy some clips from the show.
1. This Episode Is Called ‘Himalayan Hell’
With a title like “Himalayan Hell,” this episode is anything but boring. Discovery writes:
Naked and Afraid is back as two more survivalists try to survive 21 days without food, clean water, and their clothes in the Himalayan foothills of northern India. In the face of severe dehydration, one survivalists’ debilitating illness threatens to derail both their chances of success.
The survivalist suffering from severe illness is Phaedra Brothers. Brothers makes a bad judgment call by drinking from a stream without boiling the water and it makes her completely sick from almost the very start. She’s diagnosed with Dysentery, which requires no treatment and her partner tells her to consider tapping out. Phaedra, however, refuses and becomes angry at Hakim.
2. Phaedra Comes From a Nomadic Background
Phaedra is happily married to her husband James, and is a stay-at-home mother to her 5-year-old son, who comes from a nomadic family. Her Discovery bio reads:
She has a decade of experience living off the land, and has a vast survival skill set. Phaedra was born in Utah to parents who lived off the grid, embracing a communal, nomadic lifestyle. In 15 years, Phaedra moved 38 times from Alaska to Mexico and everywhere in-between. Her childhood was void of running water, electricity, doctors, and most modern conveniences.
It sounds like Phaedra should be fit for Naked And Afraid.
3. Hakim’s Nickname Is ‘Black MacGyver’
Hakim considers himself to be a ninja as he’s the Owner of Elevo Dynamics: 24 Hour Family Gym and Ninja Martial Art. He also says that many call him the “Black MacGyver.” His Discovery bio states:
He became interested in outdoor survival in 1999 when he moved to Ohio in his early 20s to study To-Shin Do Ninjutsu (Modern Ninja Self Defense) under first American Ninja Stephen K. Hayes. He learned many skills during his Ninja Training, and now holds a 4th degree Black Belt in To-Shin Do Ninjutsu … At the Dojym, Hakim teaches To-Shin Do Ninjutsu (Ninja Self-Defense), Pressure Point (a functional cardio kickboxing class that he designed), and Combat Kali (a stick and knife fighting martial arts). Here his focus is empowering the family and helping to build a healthy and powerful community.
In addition to teaching, Hakim has published his own book titled Modern Hand to Hand Combat and is working on a new book called Indigenous.
4. Phaedra Was Raised to Believe the Woman Should Serve Man
While growing up, Phaedra was raised to serve man. Discovery gives the details on her background saying:
As a child, Phaedra was raised to believe that as a woman, her only purpose in life was to serve a man. As a young adult, she was heavily influenced by religious pressure to fit a similar mold. Through a myriad of experiences and challenges, Phaedra broke away from these expectations to become the strong and determined individual that she is today.
Perhaps this background contributes to the way Phaedra shuts down her partner Hakim, refusing to be a team player and lashing out at him.
5. Hakim Has Training From His Army Days
Before becoming interested in martial arts, Hakim was in the army. Discovery writes:
Hakim continued to gain knowledge of the outdoors during his survival and evasion training as a member of the Army Special Operations Forces. Upon exiting the military, he maintained his interest in outdoor survival and went on to train with his ninja peers at Quest Tactical Solutions, where he is an assistant instructor.
Hakim’s family was greatly affected by both Hurricane Katrina and Sandy, and it made Hakim realize how important survival skills are in these situations.
