WWE SummerSlam 2014: Results & Highlights

The WWE is ready to head out of the summer with a bang with SummerSlam 2014. This evening's planned card of matches features the most intense rivalries that have been built up during these warm days. We're here to compile all the results and highlights of this major PPV/special WWE Network event. Make sure you check out the live PPV Kickoff show on the WWE Network, starting at 7:30 p.m. EST! Rob Van Dam vs. Cesaro Winner: Rob Van Dam! Results/Highlights: Both men locked up, which Cesaro initially got the better of. RVD got back into the fight by leapfrogging Cesaro over him and then landing a nice kick to his jaw. Cesaro threw RVD to the ropes and RVD soon landed a nice Hurricanrana on Cesaro. The action spilled to the outside where RVD landed another kick and a Rolling Thunder on Cesaro. Back in the ring, Cesaro jumped on RVD with some stiff strikes and strongman suplexes. Cesaro soon locked RVD in a rear chin lock and kept him grounded for a while. RVD got up and soon ran to the ropes, but he got caught by Cesaro with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Cesaro then did his own Rolling Thunder motion, which was capped off by a double boot stomp to RVD's stomach. RVD soon recovered and then launched into his signature offense. RVD's flurry of comeback offense ended with a moonsault to Cesaro on the outside. RVD jumped to the top rope, but was met with an European Uppercut by Cesaro. Cesaro looked to slam him back down to the mat, but RVD pushed him off multiple times. Cesaro surprised RVD while he was airborne and landed another European Uppercut. Cesaro picked up RVD after a 2-count and booted him in the face. RVD soon got back to his feet, landed a side kick and finally landed his 5-Star Frog splash for the win. The Miz (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler (WWE Intercontinental Championship) Winner: The new WWE Intercontinental Champion, Dolph Ziggler! Best Moments/Highlights: Before the bout began, The Miz spoke on all the big summer blockbuster films and its flood of non-human CGI characters. He told the crowd that they were in the presence of a real-life, human movie star. The match began with Ziggler and The Miz exchanging a nice series of moves and swift counters. Miz moved to the outside and got caught by a clothesline by Ziggler. Ziggler tried to roll up Miz in a School Boy pin, but Miz kicked out. He was met with a stiff kick to the chest, though. Ziggler tried to throw Miz into the ropes, but Miz countered and drove him in the ring apron. Miz worked over Ziggler for quite a while, but soon Ziggler gained his 2nd wind. Ziggler put down Miz with several moves and even landed a nice Superkick to Miz's money maker. Ziggler only got a 2-count for that maneuver, though. Miz left the ring and tried to leave the match with his title in tow, but Ziggler landed a Baseball Slide to him on the outside. Ziggler tried to bring Miz back into the ring, but he was cut off when Miz kicked the ring ropes into his nether regions. Mix locked in the Figure Four Leglock for a few minutes, but Ziggler fought his way to the ropes. Ziggler got up, went for a Fame Asser, missed, landed awkwardly on his injured legs and got dropped with Miz's Skull Crushing Finale. Ziggler surprisingly kicked out, though. Miz went for a finishing boot to the face but Ziggler ducked and finally finished Miz with his Zig Zag. AJ Lee (c) vs. Paige (WWE Divas Championship) Winner: The new WWE Divas Champion, Paige! Best Moments/Highlights: Paige looked to shake AJ's hand, but AJ decided to bite it instead. AJ even ripped out some of Paige's hair. When both women got back into the ring, Paige landed a nice kick to AJ. Paige looked to boot AJ in the chest while she was laid over the middle ring rope, but AJ pushed her away. Paige woke up though and dropped her chest first into the side ring barrier. Back in the ring, Paige creepily crawled up on a prone AJ and landed some stiff punches. Paige then successfully landed some knees to AJ on the middle ring ropes. Both women soon found themselves fighting for real estate on the top ring apron, which AJ got the better off once she pushed Paige off. AJ then threw herself onto Paige while she was still on the outside. AJ threw Paige back into the ring and hit her Shining Wizard for a 2-count. Paige got back up and dropped AJ with a nice big boot. AJ looked to make Paige tap out to the Black Widow, but Paige countered with a DDT-type maneuver for the final pin. Afterwards, Paige picked up AJ and kissed her on the cheek. Jack Swagger vs. Rusev (Flag Match) Winner: Rusev! Best Moments/Highlights: Lana did her usual routine of crapping on the pro-U.S. crowd and speaking on everything's that wrong with Hollywood. She stated that Rusev represents the cold harsh truth of reality. After her speech, a group of U.S. military officials marched out to a chorus of "U.S.A.!" chants. Jack Swagger and Zeb Coulter then made their entrance and proclaiming "WE THE PEOPLE!" A flag waving competition began between both men, but Rusev ran at Swagger before the bell even rang. Swagger soon caught Rusev with a boot and locked him in an early Patriot Lock submission attempt. Once the bell finally rang, Swagger went back to weakening Rusev's now injured ankle. Rusev looked to move away from Swagger's offense, but he soon got taken down by a clothesline from Swagger on the outside of the ring. Swagger went for a splash to Rusev but he countered by getting his knees up. Rusev, which still noticeably limping, began beating down Swagger with strikes. Rusev soon locked on a Bearhug on Swagger, which focused on further injuring Swagger's mid-section. Rusev continued to beat on Swagger's mid-section as the bout wore on. Out of nowhere, Swagger pulled himself back to his feet and slammed Rusev with a Belly to Belly Suplex, Swagger then went his signature comeback sequence and eventually landed his Swagger Bomb splash on Rusev. Swagger began struggling with a recovering Rusev, but he soon put Rusev back down with a Powerslam. Rusev got back to his feet and then kicked Swagger in the ribs and right in the mouth. Lana then gave the signal, which led to Rusev looking to lock in The Accolade. However, Rusev was unable to do it because of his injured ankle. Rusev chose to lock it in while standing on one foot instead. Swagger fought out of it and soon locked Rusev back in the Patriot Lock. Rusev shockingly fought Swagger's ankle lock off and dropped him with a spinning heel kick. He then locked Swagger back into The Accolade, which led to Swagger passing out from the extreme pain. Rusev topped off his win by attacking Zeb Coulter. The Russian National Anthem began playing and the Russian Flag was raises, much to the displeasure of the live crowd in attendance. Best Moments/Highlights: The lumberjacks were already spread out amongst the outside of the ring as Rollins entered the arena. As soon as Ambrose entered the ring, both men started to tear into each other with punches. Rollins ended up falling to the outside of the ring 1st and then got forcefully launched back into the ring. Rollins got back into the match by beating down Ambrose and then throwing him outside of the ring. A few of the lumberjacks began their assault on Ambrose before returning him to Rollins. Rollins continued beating down Ambrose by stomping him in the corner of the ring and locking him in an armbar. Ambrose fought out of it and began beating down Rollins again. Ambrose found himself on the ring apron at one point, which led to him eventually suplexing Rollins onto several lumberjacks. A big melee ensued on the outside between the lumberjacks and both competitors. Ambrose sent Rollins back first into a chair in the audience section, but he was pulled away from him by a few lumberjacks. Ambrose chose to then vault through the ropes and put down some of the same lumberjacks who stopped him beforehand. The action spilled into the crowd and both Rollins and Ambrose fought all over the arena. Ambrose got grabbed by a few lumberjacks and got brought back into the ring while Rollins looked to escape the match. However, a bunch of other lumberjacks captured Rollins and returned him to the match. Before they got him back in the ring, Ambrose splashed both the lumberjacks and Rollins on the outside. Ambrose looked to finish Rollins with his Dirty Deeds finisher but Rollins reversed and hit a nice side kick. Ambrose fell to the middle of the ring ropes and dropped Rollins with a Lariat for the 2-count. Ambrose got up and then hit Rollins with his own Curb Stomp. Kane stopped an Ambrose pin attempt, which led to Goldust getting in Kane's face. All of a sudden, a big brawl ensued between everyone. Amidst the chaos, Rollins cracked Ambrose with his Money in the Bank briefcase for the win. Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho Winner: Bray Wyatt! Best Moments/Highlights: JERICHO'S PRE-MATCH COUNTDOWN IS BACK! Pretty cool entrances from him and Bray Wyatt. Y2J even debuted a new light-up jacket that even changed colors. Both men locked up at the start of the match, but it soon devolved into a brawl. Jericho elbowed Bray to the outside ring apron and followed up with a Springboard Elbow. Jericho began beating down Bray even more and soon landed a body press from the top rope. Bray kicked out of Jericho's pin attempt, though. While Jericho was on top of the ring ropes, Bray decided to simply push him off. Bray began beating down Jericho on the outside of the ring, which was capped off by Bray stuffing his knee into Jericho near the steel steps. Back in the ring, Bray shoved Jericho's shoulder into the steel ring apron. Bray jumped to the outside and began striking Jericho while his head lied near the same steel ring apron. Bray then caught Jericho's throat on the ring ropes and then locked him in a sleeper submission. Jericho soon fought out of Bray's chokehold and began landing his array of signature comeback moves on Bray. Jericho looked to hit Bray from the top of the ring ropes again, but Bray landed a nice Lariat that followed by a Running Senton. Bray stuffed Jericho into the corner and splashed him, but he was soon caught with a dropkick after he went for another corner splash. Once both men got back to their feet, Bray caught Jericho with a Uranage side slam for the 2-count. Bray looked to land his Sister Abigail, but Y2J fought out of it and countered with his Walls of Jericho. Bray soon found himself near the ring ropes, which forced Y2J to break his submission hold. Soon, Bray and Jericho were both seen standing on the ring apron. Bray decided to DDT headfirst right into the ring apron. Back in the ring, Bray hopped onto the 2nd rope but Jericho put him back down with a top rope Hurricanrana. Y2J only managed to get a 2-count off of this move, though. Jericho picked Bray back up and clotheslined him in the corner. Bray got back up and ran to the ring ropes, but he was met with a front dropkick. Bray woke back up and entered into his strange ring crawl, which creeped out Jericho. Jericho woke up out of his scared stare and hit his Codebreaker, but Bray managed to leave the ring after a 2-count. Bray woke up, severely punched out Jericho and hit his Sister Abigail finisher on him into the the crowd barrier. Back in the ring, Bray hit a 2nd Sister Abigail for the 1-2-3. After the match, Bray sung his signature song to the crowd. Brie Bella vs. Stephanie McMahon Winner: Stephanie McMahon! Best Moments/Highlights: Steph entered the arena with a pretty sexy suit of new in-ring gear. The bell rang and both women locked up in an intense 1st exchange. Steph overpowered Brie on the 2nd lockup exchange against Brie. The 3rd time both women locked up, Brie armdragged Steph. Brie surprised Steph with another armdrag and then locked her into waist lock. Steph powered out of it and landed a nice back elbow to get Brie off of her. Steph began landing shoulder thrusts and a few elbows onto Brie while she was laid out near the ring corner. Steph threw down Steph into the ring and began taunting her with "YES!" finger pointing. Brie saw this and looked to lock Steph into the Yes Lock, but Steph fought out of it and left the ring. Brie looked to vault through the ropes onto her opponent, but Steph countered her with a stiff elbow. Brie woke back up and entered the ring, only to be met with nice DDT from Steph. Brie kicked out of a pin attempt by Steph, but Brie was soon put back down with several surprisingly crisp wrestling moves. Steph then locked Brie into a submission attempt for added punishment. Brie used her kicks to push Steph off of her, which then led to Brie recovering and dropping Steph with a Lou Thesz press. Brie got fired up and landed some Daniel Bryan-esque side kicks to Steph over and over in the ring corner. Brie then started slamming Steph around the ring and even hit her with a top-rope dropkick. Steph fought out of it and recovered, though. Suddenly, Triple H and Nikki Bella ran out to support their people. Brie looked to finish Steph with the Yes Lock after a Pedigree attempt by Steph, but HHH pulled the ref out before Steph could tap. In a surprise ending, Nikki hopped into the ring to seemingly help Brie beat up Steph. Suddenly, Nikki laid out her own twin sister with a stiff elbow shot. Steph picked up a weakened Brie and hit her finishing Pedigree for the win. Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns Winner: Roman Reigns! Best Moments/Highlights: Orton sported his new purple tights for this contest. Once both men stared into each other's faces, Roman laid Orton out with a series of punches. The action quickly spilled outside but Orton ran back into the ring before Reigns could get his hands on him. Reigns landed a few more punches on Orton and soon clotheslined him to the outside of the ring. Orton ended up countering Reign's throw attempt by instead launching Reigns into the steel ring steps. Orton placed his opponent back into the ring and locked in a sleeper hold. Reigns powered out soon enough, but Orton grabbed his hard and slammed him back into the ring on the back of his head. Orton began stomping on Reigns for a bit and then went to land his knee drop. Reigns moved out of the way, but Orton managed to put him back down. Orton put Reigns on the top of the ring ropes and then landed a big Superplex on Reigns. He only got a 2-count from this big move, however. Orton locked Reigns into another sleeper hold, but Reigns soon countered and locked Orton into a sleeper hold of his own. Orton dropped back-first whole Reigns was still on him, but Reigns quickly woke back up and locked in his submission hold again. Orton responded by back dropping Reigns. Orton locked his sleeper hold back in for a bit before Reigns got back to his feet once again. Reigns soon landed a powerful Samoan Slam to Orton. Reigns and Orton began stirring slowly and getting back up to meet each other face to face. Both men woke up and began punching each other left and right, but Reigns got the better of their exchange. Reigns put down Orton and landed his running dropkick to Orton as he was laid over the bottom ring ropes. Orton made sure to get back up and push Reigns into the crowd barricade and steel ring post on the outside. Orton then put down Reigns by backdropping Reigns onto the Spanish Announce Table and throwing him into a set of steel ring steps. The action headed back into the ring, which saw Reigns lay Orton's neck across the ring ropes. Reigns put Orton on the top of the ring ropes, but Orton pushed him back down to the mat. Reigns struck Orton with a punch and then landed a top rope Samoan Drop for the 2-count. Reigns soon landed his Superman Punch on Orton. Reigns went for his Spear, but Orton countered with a quick Powerslam for the 2-count. Orton then dropped Reigns with his patented rind ropes-hung DDT. Orton went for an RKO, Reigns pushed him off, went for a Spear but then got caught by a surprise RKO. Orton only got a 2-count once again. Orton then went to KO Reigns with his running boot, but Reigns caught Orton and pushed him down. Reigns then landed a match winning Spear. John Cena (c) vs. Brock Lesnar (WWE World Heavyweight Championship) Winner: The new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar! Best Moments/Highlights: Lesnar and Cena immediately began tearing into each other. Out of nowhere, Lesnar caught Cena with an F5. Cena kicked out! Afterwards, Lesnar circled Cena while he was laid out. Lesnar then landed two German Suplexes on Cena just for extra measure. While Cena looked to recover, Lesnar struck him with a knee to the ribs. Lesnar picked up Cena for a quick Snap Suplex as Paul Heyman gleefully watched on. Cena soon recovered and began pummeling Lesnar into the corner of the ring, but Lesnar fought him off with another knee to the ribs. Lesnar locked Cena into a chinlock, but Cena fought back with elbows to Lesnar's guts. Lesnar shook off Cena's elbows and kneed him back down once again. Cena soon found his hand being stepped on by a towering Lesnar and then ended up on the end of several German Suplexes. Lesnar looked to pin Cena, but Cena kicked out. This move of course pissed of Lesnar, which forced him to stuff Cena with more knees to the ribs. Lesnar picked up Cena once again and German Suplexed him another time. Cena struggled to get back to his feet while the ref looked on. Once he got back up, Lesnar ragdolled him with another German Suplex. Lesnar went for another German Suplex, but Cena began fighting back with stiff elbow strikes. Lesnar picked Cena up for an F5 but Cena jumped out of it and hit his Attitude Adjustment on Lesnar for a 2-count. Lesnar got back up just like The Undertaker and smiled at a prone Cena in the corner of the ring. Cena ran right into Lesnar but he got put down with a takedown and some ground and pound punches. Lesnar powered Cena down with a slew of multiple German Suplexes afterwards. Lesnar circled Cena like a vulture about to finish his prey. Cena managed to hop back up, but he was met with even more German Suplexes. The ref almost counted Cena out, but Cena caught Lesnar with an STF out of nowhere. Lesnar easily swatted Cena off of him and landed some extra punches and another German Suplex. Lesnar ended the bout with a massive F5 for the championship win. Best Non-Match Moments/Highlights • After Cesaro took an L against RVD, he made his way to the pre-show stage and hilariously punked the ref who refereed the match. "HE COUNTED TOO FAST!" • Hulk Hogan came out to start the show and get the crowd excited. His opening promo was full of the usual spoken pomp and circumstance Hogan is known for. He did some great WWE Network shilling...WHICH ONLY COSTS $9.99! • Brie Bella spoke on her upcoming climactic encounter with Stephanie McMahon. She spoke on the ill will shown towards her, her sister and Daniel Bryan. She vowed to take out the she-beast, which she quoted as "Best for Business." • Jake Tucker aka "Mama's Boy!" won the "Show Us Your Superstar!" contest and got some world-class training from the New Age Outlaws and Bill DeMott. He made his entrance in a pre-taped segment (to The Hurricane's old theme song). • WWE SummerSlam 2015 was revealed to be making its comeback to New York/New Jersey.
