In the letter is a newspaper clipping showing that Harrison is dead. In turn, Olivia and Jake return to D.C. It’s revealed that Quinn sent the newspaper clipping.

Olivia wants Abby’s help in planning Harrison’s funeral and Abby wants nothing to do with Olivia. Neither does Huck, who now goes by Randy.

Olivia later finds out about another death … her mother’s, told to her by her father, but she handles it coldly and drinks a glass of wine.

2. Portia de Rossi Is Introduced to the Show

Portia de Rossi’s character Liz is ready to stir up some trouble at the White House and wants to know what’s going on with the first lady Mellie. Mellie is having a rough time, refuses to get dressed properly and she’s more scatter-brained than ever. Mellie and Fitz are still recovering from their son’s death. At one point, Fitz and Mellie visit their sons grave. Mellie is wearing her bathrobe and takes comfort in lying down on her back in front of her son’s tombstone.

3. Olivia Is Called to Help Cover Up the Death of a Senator

Olivia’s at her home with Jake when her phone rings and then a woman starts knocking on her door saying that her boss is on the phone and needs her help. It’s Senator Stephanie Vaughn calling Olivia to tell her she just killed Senator Sterling. Vaughn says it was self-defense, that he tried to rape her, and Olivia seeks help from Clark. Sterling is not dead and, though Olivia believes her at first, she later accuses her of lying and finds out it was Vaughn’s secretary who was attacked by Sterling. Vaughn was covering up for her employee.

On a side note, David Rosen becomes Attorney General.

4. There’s a Foreshadowing of a Reconciliation Between Olivia and Fitz

When the president finds out that Olivia is back in town, he becomes visibly upset and wants to know how long she will be in town for. Cyrus breaks the news to Fitz that he doesn’t know how long Olivia will be around, but believes that their getting together again is inevitable. He basically says that it’s the same old story and it’s bound to happen. Oh, and Cyrus comes back with some crazy hair.

Fitz breaks the news to his wife that Olivia is back, but he’s not going to see her. Mellie doesn’t believe him and tells him that when he sees her, she wants him to let her know.

At the end of the first episode, Fitz and Olivia run into each other, but walk right past each other. As each walks away, a smile comes across their faces, which leads us to believe there’s a future romance on the horizon.

5. Abby And Huck Show Up to Harrison’s Funeral

Despite the resentment and anger, both Huck and Abby show up to Harrison’s funeral, where Olivia reveals that Harrison had no family. Abby and Olivia even hold hands. They each cry and scatter rose petals over Harrison’s coffin. As Jake is comforting Olivia at the funeral, he spots Olivia’s father spying on them from a limousine. This makes you think that Papa Pope may have something to do with Harrison’s death even though he assured Olivia he had no part in it.
