Meghan Trainor may be a new artist in the pop industry, but she’s a performer at the 2014 Country Music Association Awards. Trainor is a full-sized powerhouse of a performer and she kills it with her music. One thing that is truly great about Trainor is her body image. She’s a full-figured girl and loves to embrace her curves, hoping to spread the message to fans that you don’t need to be pin-thin to be beautiful. Read on for all the info on Trainor, her family, her country roots, and her early success.

1. She Was Writing Tracks for Rascal Flatts at Age 18

When Trainor was just 18 years old, Rascal Flatts picked up two of her songs. The NY Daily News writes:

Trainor penned her first piece at age 11 to toast her uncle at his wedding. Recognizing her talent, her dad bought her a MacBook and pointed out the GarageBand feature. She was using it to produce songs by age 13 … When she was 18, her writing got her a publishing deal … Two of her songs were recorded by the country band Rascal Flatts. She titled one “Liquor Talking,” which is “about going to bars, which I don’t go to,” she admitted.

Trainor moved to Nashville when she was 19 years old and has had songwriting cuts with Rascal Flatts, Sabrina Carpenter, R5, and many others. So, if you’re wondering why Trainor is performing at a country awards show, here’s the proof of her country roots.

2. “All About That Bass” Is Her Hit Song

The song “All About That Bass” is what has put Trainor on the map. It’s set records such as chart history in the UK by being the first act to enter the Official Singles Chart Top 40 based on streams alone. Trainor loves blowing away the stereotype of the super thin pop star. She even writes about it in her songs, like the line from “All About That Bass” that states: It’s pretty clear I ain’t no size two/but I can shake it, shake it like I’m supposed to. And, when talking about her tour, she told the NY Daily News:

They let me eat pizza! I’m getting Chinese food tonight! I’m so excited. It’s all I’m thinking about.

She also dished about the reason for her addressing her size in her music:

I didn’t work this hard to hate on skinny people. I wrote the song to help my body confidence — and to help others.
