Evan Joseph Asher
Jenny McCarthy met director John Asher on the set of the drama Diamonds in 1999, and the pair got married that September. In 2002, they welcome their first child together, a baby boy named Evan Joseph Asher. McCarthy and Asher decided to divorce in 2005. Two years later, McCarthy went public with the news that her son Evan was autistic. Huffington Post reported: In 2007, McCarthy announced her son had been diagnosed with autism after bouts of seizures and said she was able to treat him through alternative methods not backed by the scientific community. Even more controversially, she suggested her son's autism was linked to the Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccination and began a public crusade against vaccines. In the beginning of 2014, there were reports that McCarthy was saying her son wasn't autistic at all, but McCarthy took to Twitter to dispute the false reports: Stories circulating online, claiming that I said my son Evan may not have autism after all, are blatantly inaccurate and completely ridiculous. Evan was diagnosed with autism by the Autism Evaluation Clinic at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital and was confirmed by the State of California (through their Regional Center). The implication that I have changed my position, that my child was not initially diagnosed with autism (and instead may suffer from Landau-Kleffner Syndrome), is both irresponsible and inaccurate.
The Difficulties Of Autism
When Evan was in summer camp, McCarthy learned that he was being bullied, but because of his autism, he didn't realize it. People writes: "My son's main goal is to make as many friends as possible," McCarthy said, before adding that she got a heartbreaking email from the camp revealing that the kids he believes are his "friends" are actually bullying him. "They're laughing at him but he laughs too," she said. "I said, 'You have to find the kids that like you and are nice to you. Who do you sit next to in the cafeteria?' And he said, 'No one. I ask, and they say no.' It's so wonderful that he's not aware that kids are making fun of him. But at what point do I need to teach him that?" she asked. "Evan told me, 'They ask me to put bugs down my pants and I do it and they laugh.' He thinks it's funny. Do I just let him be? At what point does it stop? In high school they'll be like, 'Here drink this?' 'Okay!' On the plus side of things, Evan has made great progress, even giving a short speech at McCarthy's wedding to husband Donnie Wahlberg.
When McCarthy joined the TV show The View in 2013, her son Evan couldn't decide if he wanted to stay in their hometown Chicago for the rest of the school year or just move to New York right away with his mother. McCarthy explained: My son is so funny because I let him [decide whether to stay] in Chicago and finish up school this year, or just come out with me full time, and he said, 'No, my girlfriend's in Chicago. I have to finish up fifth grade.' But then when he comes here, he says, 'I really like it here. Maybe I'll live here and dump her.' I'm like, 'Oh, my God.' So I let him decide what he wants to do, and I'll support him. McCarthy originally moved son Evan to Chicago so that he could have a normal childhood, unlike one he might have in Los Angeles. It's clear that Evan has found a loving family with his new stepfather Donnie Wahlberg and mom Jenny McCarthy.
