Westeros is a big place. It sits to the west of Essos (pun intended). Combined, these two continents form the known world of Game of Thrones that fans call Planetos. Sometimes it’s helpful to look at a map to get your bearings, and we’ve found the very best maps around. So check below to gain some PhD level insights into the world that George R. R. Martin built. With a show as intricate as Game of Thrones, you need these maps just to keep up with what’s going on.

Here are the maps that you must see.

A Revelation About Westeros

You can file this under “How am I just now hearing about this?” A submitter on the “A Song of Ice and Fire” Reddit group figure out that Westeros looks just like England with Ireland flipped upside down and attached to the bottom. He wrote about it on this thread and shared his photo on Imgur below:

George R. R. Martin has admitted to being inspired by English history for many of the plots in his series. In fact, in this video below, at the 14:47 mark, Martin admitted to Westeros starting out as an upside down Ireland:

The Interactive ‘Game of Thrones’ Intro Video

HBO made a 360 degree interactive map of the Game of Thrones intro video. Click and drag on the video to turn the camera angle. If you pull it up on your phone, it uses the phone’s motion sensors to turn the camera – which is pretty amazing technology for a Game of Thrones map. If the embedded map below doesn’t work on your browser, try it with the direct link.

Now we have what fans refer to as the mother of all maps, an interactive map created by QuarterMaester. Not only is is beautiful and super detailed – but you’ve got to check out the “show character paths” feature. It lays out the journey each character has had, right up to whatever chapter you choose. Now that was a labor of love. You can see the entire interactive map at this link.

If, for whatever reason, you need another map – then check this one out by A Map of Ice and Fire. It’s not as beautiful as the one above, but it’s just as detailed. Here’s just one shot from the map:
