Lizzie Velasquez, who suffers from a disease that makes it impossible for her to gain weight, is the subject of Lifetime‘s new documentary, A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. The movie debuted at SXSW 2015, but makes its TV debut on Lifetime on October 17 at 8 p.m. ET. Read on for a preview of the film.
A Brave Heart was directed by Sara Hirsh Bordo and tells the story of Lizzie Velasquez, from her childhood to becoming a world-famous motivational speaker. The Austin, Texas-born Velasquez was devastated in 2006 to see a YouTube video that called her the “World’s Ugliest Woman.” Rather than retreat from the spotlight, she became an anti-bullying advocate. In 2013, she gave an inspirational TED Talk, which has over 10 million views.
The film earned near-unanimous praise after its debut last year, and has a 93 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “With simple storytelling, the film allows its star, Velasquez, to shine, and with her endless reserves of positive energy, eloquent speaking and willingness to be vulnerable, it’s no wonder millions of people have already found her inspirational,” The Los Angeles Times review reads.
Bordo is a first-time director. She told Heavy.com that the film was made in seven cities and the production team had to be careful of the rigors of their filming schedule and mindful of Velasquez’s health. She said that the film has already been seen on television in nearly 40 countries outside the U.S. thanks to a deal with National Geographic. With such negativity in the news, Bordo told Heavy.com that she couldn’t think of a better time for the film to air. ” I can’t think of a better moment in our country’s time for people to experience the bright light of our @littlelizziev. #womenrising,” she wrote on Instagram.
