Bon Jovi and Hurley got married on April 29, 1989 and were high school sweethearts. Ultimate Classic Rock notes that the couple tied the knot in Las Vegas during a short break from Bon Jovi’s New Jersey tour. The couple didn’t even have wedding rings.

“We did it for us and didn’t give a damn,” Bon Jovi said in an episode of Vh1’s Behind the Music when asked if they cared what Bon Jovi’s fans thought. “I got a lot of heat from it, between the band, my parents, Doc [McGhee, Bon Jovi’s manager]. Everybody was pissed off. It took me a couple of days before I realized that I don’t give a s*** what anybody thinks.”

Before marrying Hurley, Bon Jovi was in a relationship with actress Diane Lane during the early 1980s. Former Bon Jovi manager Rich Bozzett detailed that relationship in a 2010 book, The Daily Mail notes. The two broke up in 1985, since Lane was also having a relationship with Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. (Sambora, who has now left the group, was married to Heather Locklear from 1994-2007.)

Off the stage and out of the recording studio, Bon Jovi leads a busy life as a philanthropist. The couple run the JBJ Soul Kitchen restaurants, where customers are encouraged to “pay it foreward.” According to their site, 60 percent of meals are paid for through donations and 40 percent of customers have earned meals through volunteering. They have served over 56,000 meals, which feature locally-sourced foods. The restaurants are in Red Bank and Toms River, New Jersey.

“I think the intention was just to feed people in need and then try to figure out a way to sustain that,” Hurley told CBS News in May 2016.

“When you come into this restaurant, there are no prices on our menu. So if you are in need, you participate,” Bon Jovi explained. “And that means bussing the table, washing a dish, working in our gardens. If you are here to just enjoy a meal and affect change directly by buying a Pay It Forward card, you are paying for your meal and for someone else’s that are here in the restaurant or are going to come tomorrow, and you don’t know the difference between who are in need and who are not in need.”

The JBJ Soul Foundation Soul Kitchen is also part of the B.E.A.T. Center in Orange County, New Jersey. The couple started their effort in Toms River, which was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.

3. The Couple Have 4 Children, Including Stephanie, who Recovered From a Heroin Overdose

Bon Jovi and Hurley have four children: Stephanie, 23; Jesse James Louis, 21; Jacob Hurley, 14; and Romeo Jon, 12.

Stephanie made headlines in 2012 when she was 19 and overdosed on heroin in her college dorm room. She was arrested, but charges were later dropped. A year after the overdose, Stephanie was with her family at an event in London hosted by Prince William.

“It was horrible, a horrible moment. It was my worst moment as a father,” Bon Jovi told the Mirror in May 2013. “The first thing she said, I’m all right but then she said this is what happened. You wake up, you shake it off and put your shoes on and say OK, I am on the way home.”

Bon Jovi said that the experience is something that many parents go through and they were lucky that their daughter survived.

“I feel it was a terrible tragic lesson of life but I thank God every day because she is whole,” he told the Mirror. “It happened and it has gone. I know personally people whose sons and daughters, where it was a lot, lot worse. That could have been Stephanie.”
