1. Terror Behind the Walls

Description: Terror Behind the Walls is a haunted house that takes place in the walls of Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia’s Fairmont neighborhood. It’s been consistently ranked as one of the scariest attractions in the country. According to Visit Philly, Eastern State Penitentiary is one of the most famous and expensive prisons in the country. This particular experience is “designed to be high-startle”, and uses quality lighting, sound, and other special effects to make the experience as scary as possible– over 200 actors are involved in the exhibit, which is split into six attractions on an 11-acre complex.

2. Pennhurst Asylum

Description: Pennhurst State School and Hospital was originally known as Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic. It was originally founded for the treatment of mentally and physically disabled people, and closed on December 9, 1987.

3. Statesville Haunted Prison®

Description: In this attraction, visitors make their way through 23 maximum security cells as they’re haunted by  “over 100 criminals that were too evil to die”. After making their way through the walls of Statesville, visitors will enter the City of the Dead, where they run from zombies while dodging mine shafts and mass graves.

4. Brighton Asylum

Description: Brighton’s complex is a series of old warehouses that was originally used to house mentally unstable and psychologically disabled individuals in the mid 1940s. The site reads “After years of extremely harsh living conditions, grotesque medical experiments, staff disappearances, and screams spilling into the residential areas during the night, the state permanently closed the facility in 1952 pending a full investigation. No such results of an investigation can be found to date.”

5. Terror on the Fox

Description: This scary attraction has four separate sections– and although it’s located at a real train station, one of its main attractions is an asylum. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Terror on the Fox, which Miranda Schutt, one of the women behind the attraction, says is a cause for celebration.  “You see people of all ages screaming and dropping to their knees. We have a really great time with everybody.”
