WATCH: New ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Trailer Shows It’s About More Than The Death Star

The new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first stand-alone film in the Star Wars franchise, was released early Thursday morning, revealing that the movie is about much more than just a band of rebels hoping to steal the Death Star plans. The film takes place shortly before the events in Star Wars: A New Hope.

It reveals a surprising amount of details on Jyn Erso‘s past and the connection her father has to the dreaded space station that’s no moon.

The trailer reveals the importance of Galen Erso, played by Mads Mikkselsen. He’s a scientist tracked down by Krennic (Ben Mendeslohn) and the Empire to design what they need to create a fully-functioning Death Star. Jyn (Felictiy Jones) being sent by the Rebellion to steal the Death Star plans seems like an excuse for her to rescue her father from the Empire’s clutches.

Disney and Lucasfilm released the trailer a day after unveiling a new poster for the film. It also came after another effort to save the film from bad PR related to this past summer’s reshoots. In a profile on Felicity Jones by the Hollywood Reporter, the actress and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy downplayed the reshoots.

“Obviously when you come to the edit, you see the film come together and you think, ‘Actually, we could do this better, and this would make more sense if we did this,'” Jones said. “I’ve done it so many times. I mean, you wouldn’t just give your first draft on this story, would you?”

The film was directed by Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso. The film hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
