Indie musician James Bay has had a great year, and to top it off, he’s been added to the A-list lineup of celebs who will be performing at the 2016 American Music Awards tonight. The 26-year-old soared to stardom in 2014, after releasing his single Hold Back the River, and earned three Grammy Award nominations this year at the 2016 Grammys. But what about Bay’s personal life? Is he single? Does he have a girlfriend? Read on to find out.

A 2015 article in The Guardian revealed that not only does Bay have a girlfriend, but they’ve been together since they were teenagers. The Standard elaborated on that romance, writing, “Bay has so far shielded his girlfriend Lucy from the public eye. The couple have been dating since they met in his home town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, as teenagers.”

Bay, himself, admitted that his girlfriend and his parents are the one who keep his head from getting too big.  “My parents and my girlfriend keep me grounded in every way you can imagine. They are the biggest support network and the biggest reminder of where I’ve come from. They put me down in all the sort of classic ways you can imagine. If ever I were to get to big for my boots, they are right there to say, ‘Hey mate, chill out.’”

The girlfriend, whose full name is Lucy Smith, may actually enjoy staying out of the pubic eye as much as James enjoys shielding her from it. Her Instagram account is private, and she makes rather infrequent appearances on her boyfriend’s social media. Smith also has 110 Instagram followers, compared to her boyfriend, with 875,000.

Bay and Smith grew up in Hitchin, Hertfordshire– a market town in England with an estimated population of a little over 33,000. The musician picked up his first guitar as an 11-year-old, and began studying in Brighton seven years later. Bay began his career playing at open mic nights, before catching the attention of a Republic Records A&R. He signed with the label, and within a year of releasing his first EP, The Dark of the Morning, he was selling out his first UK tour.
