As we've seen in the past, Jack has promised Rebecca (Mandy Moore) that he will be a better parent. He's trying to cut out drinking and be there for their children. Although we know that Jack has died in the present, we don't now exactly when he died or how he died. We do know that he must have lived until at least 2006, since Kate (Chrissy Metz) mentioned that she watched the Steelers win a Super Bowl with Jack.
