When 1980s pop icon George Michael died, he left behind a partner – Fadi Fawaz.
The last known photos of Michael in a relationship were snapped in 2015 with Fawaz in Switzerland. Although the pair generally kept their relationship private, they were photographed several times walking down the street together, including holding hands.
Fawaz, 40, who was born in Australia, tweeted after Michael’s death that he was Michael’s partner, indicating they were still together. Michael had been more low profile about his relationship than he was in the past.
On January 1, a series of tweets from Fawaz’ Twitter page alleged that Michael had committed suicide; his publicist has said Michael died of a heart attack but an autopsy found the cause of death inconclusive, and it is still being investigated although not considered suspicious. Fawaz later said his Twitter page was hacked, and he didn’t post the tweets.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Fawaz Found George Michael’s Body
Fawaz tweeted that he was the person who found Michael deceased in his bed on Christmas Day.
He wrote, “ITs (sic) a xmas i will never forget finding your partner dead peacefully in bed first thing in the morning.. I will never stop missing you xx.”
He also switched his profile picture to one of him with Michael and wrote on his profile: “I will never stop missing you xxx.” Fawaz told the Telegraph, “We were supposed to be going for Christmas lunch. I went round there to wake him up and he was just gone, lying peacefully in bed. We don’t know what happened yet. Everything had been very complicated recently, but George was looking forward to Christmas, and so was I.”
Michael’s publicist says he died peacefully in bed of a heart attack. Police have said the death is not suspicious in nature.
A few minutes after Fawaz’ Twitter page posted the allegation that Michael had killed himself, it was deleted. Fawaz now says the site was hacked. He told the Mirror he spent his night in the car and didn’t see Michael the night before Michael died; the Mirror reported that Fawaz originally claimed he spent the weekend at Michael’s house. The Star reported that police want to talk to Fawaz because there are growing fears Michael could have died from drugs.
2. Michael & Fawaz Were Photographed in Various European Cities Together
Photos of the pair first emerged in 2015, when they were photographed holding hands while walking together in Switzerland. The UK Daily Mail ran the photos at the time, showing them walking hand-in-hand down a Zurich street. The Daily Mail said that, shortly thereafter, Michael took to Twitter to deny reports that he was addicted to crack cocaine.
One of Michael’s tweets on the addiction claims read, “To my lovelies, do not believe this rubbish in the papers today by someone I don’t know anymore and haven’t seen for nearly 18 years…I am perfectly fine and enjoyed Wimbledon like the rest of you. Wish it went to 5 sets though!…Lots of love, The Singing Greek xxx.”
The pair was together since at least 2012, when they were photographed several times in different European cities. In 2013, according to the UK Daily Mail, Michael had a pricey stay at a rehab clinic to deal with anxiety. However, Fawaz denied reports that he stayed with Michael at the clinic, said Daily Mail.
3. Fawaz’ Social Media Pages Are Filled with Photography & Art
Fawaz has a photostream on Flickr in which he has posted a series of images that appear to blend photography with graphic design. He wrote on Twitter that he is a “fine art photographer.”
His Twitter page is mostly filled with those same images, although there are a few family shots and self portraits.
In one tweet, he said he was off to see his mother, who lives in Beirut. He didn’t write a lot about George Michael on Twitter, although he mentioned him occasionally and retweeted some comments about his music.
There are more self portraits of Fawaz on Twitter than photos of him with the WHAM! singer. The last photo of Michael was snapped at a London-area restaurant in September, but it’s not clear if he was dining with Fawaz.
4. Fawaz Has Worked as a Celebrity Hairstylist & Freelance Photographer
The Mirror describes Fawaz as a “celebrity hair stylist” who was linked to Michael for years, and added that the couple kept their relationship pretty private, although they were photographed together multiple times.
However, Fawaz’ LinkedIn site says he is a freelance photographer who lives in London. He wrote, “My goal is the thruth (sic) we tend to ignore.”
5. Michael Had Other Serious Relationships
Before Fawaz, Michael had at least two serious relationships that were well known in the media.
He dated the American art-dealer from Texas, Kenny Goss, for 13 years, before announcing their breakup on stage. They ended their relationship in 2009, said The Mirror. He was in love with Anselmo Feleppa, and was heart-broken when Feleppo died of AIDs.
Michael came out as gay in a 1988 interview with CNN after he was arrested for soliciting sex in a bathroom restroom. In his early years, he dated women before coming out.
