Since Christmas is behind us, that means the holiday season is nearing its end. However, that doesn’t mean we are finished with holiday specials. On Monday, December 26 at 8 p.m. ET, ABC is airing the final Charlie Brown special of the season, Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!. Read on for a preview of the special.
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! first aired on January 1, 1986 and is the 30th Peanuts special produced by Lee Mendeson and animator Bill Melendez. It was directed by Melendez with Sam Jaimes and written by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz.
The story finds Charlie Brown getting stuck with writing a book report on Leo Tolstoy’s War And Peace during winter vacation. Unfortunately, his friends want to host parties and Peppermint Patty insists that Chuck go. He also hopes that the Little Red-Haired Girl will go to the party. He still tries to get his book report completed, but nothing comes easy to good ol’ Charlie Brown.
Since 2010, ABC has paired Happy New Year with She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown, which first aired on February 25, 1980. In this one, Peppermint Patty goes to an ice skating competition with snoopy as her coach and Marcie by her side. This one doesn’t feature Linus or Lucy in speaking roles.
After tonight, ABC is sadly done airing Peanuts specials for the year. Next time we see Chuck on the small screen will be for Valentine’s Day.
