Christmas might be over, but Santa Claus, Rudolph and the other reindeer don’t get time off. In the sequel to Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Rudolph heads back to work to save New Year’s Day in Rudolph’s Shiny New Year. The special airs on ABC at 9 p.m. ET on Monday, December 26. After saving Christmas with his shiny red nose, Rudolph has to Father Time (voiced by Red Skelton) to find a new Baby New Year before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve or time will be stuck on December 31. The evil vulture Eon the Terrible has kidnapped Happy the Baby New Year to make sure his Eon never ends. It’s up to Rudolph to stop him in an adventure with stops in the days of cavemen and 1776 to meet Benjamin Franklin.
Shiny New Year is a stop-motion animation special produced by Rankin/Bass Productions, the same team behind Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) and Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town (1970). The special debuted on December 10, 1976 on ABC and was written by Romeo Muller.
