‘Star’ on Fox: When Does The Show Return?

Star cast, Star Lee Daniels, Jude Demorest, Star Songs

UPDATE: Star has been renewed for a second season. That means it will likely be back in Fall 2017 or Winter 2018.

As Deadline reports, the series was picked up for another season, despite its low ratings. The series wasn’t a big hit like Empire, averaging between a 1.2 and 1.3 rating in the key 18-49 demographic when it was renewed. Variety notes that the show’s season one finale earned a 1.3 rating and 4.07 million total viewers.

In December, Fox debuted Star, the new series from Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, who is also the filmmaker behind The Butler and Precious. The network then will re-aired the pilot episode. It returned in early January to air in its regular timeslot – Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET.

Star features Jude Demorest in the title role, Star Davis. She’s a foster child living in Pittsburgh who is desperate for a music career and to live up to her name. Star tracks down her sister, Simone (Brittany O’Grady) at another foster home and takes her to Atlanta. Along the way, she picks up her friend Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) to be the third member of a girl group.

Once in Atlanta, Star and Simone find their godmother, Carlotta (Queen Latifah), who runs a salon and had a hit song years ago with their now-deceased mother. While at a strip club, Star meets Jahil Rivera (Benjamin Bratt), a down-on-his-luck manager who sees potential in Star and her group. Unbeknownst to Star, Jahil was also Carlotta and her mother’s agent and Carlotta blames Jahil for everything bad that happened to them.

The second episode of Star was titled “The Devil You Know.” Here’s the episode description from Fox:

While Star, Alexandra and Simone work on a demo for their chance to perform at a music festival, Roland Crane (guest star Lenny Kravitz) and his wife, Rose (guest star Naomi Campbell), come into town, revealing a big secret that threatens to destroy the group. Star then goes to extreme measures and risks it all to try to get her music produced by Roland. Meanwhile, Carlotta and Jahil go head-to-head, each trying to keep their secrets buried as someone’s life hangs in the balance in the all-new “The Devil You Know” time period premiere episode of STAR airing Wednesday, Jan. 4 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Star was created by Daniels with Tom Donaghy (The Whole Truth). Like Empire, each episode of the series features a number of songs. The pilot included “I Can Be” and “I Bring Me.”
