Ben Affleck as Joe Coughlin
Six years after Argo hit theaters and later became an Oscar-winning movie, Ben Affleck returned to home turf with Live By Night. The film is the second time Affleck has brought a Dennis Lehane, Boston-set novel to the big screen, after he turned Gone Baby Gone into a critically acclaimed film in 2007.
Live By Night
was published in 2012 and is the second of three novels involving the Coughlin family. The novel is set during the Prohibition era and tells the story of Joe Coughlin, the son of a respected Boston police captain who is love with the mistress of gangster Albert White, the leader of the Irish Gang of Boston. After serving his time for the murder of three police officers, he hears of opportunities in Ybor City, a part of Tampa. He decides to move down to build his own criminal empire, while also marrying a Cuban businessman's girlfriend.
Like most Affleck films, the writer, director and star has assembled a cast of top-shelf talent. After casting himself as Joe, Affleck picked Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Zoe Saldana and Sienna Miller for key roles. Oscar-winner Chris Cooper rounds out the main cast.
