On tonight’s episode of Shadowhunters, Jocelyn was killed by a demon. The death came as a particular shock to fans, as it diverges from the book series that inspired the show.
The Twittersphere certainly took notice of Jocelyn’s sudden passing, which was all the more shocking since Clary and her mother had only recently reconnected. In the pilot episode, Jocelyn was kidnapped, and was largely missing from the remainder of Season 1. Throughout the first half of Season 2, Clary and her mother failed to see eye to eye, and fought endlessly.
In a recent interview with TV Guide, actress Katherine McNamara explained that Jocelyn’s death was a necessary step in Clary’s journey as a Shadowhunter. Executive producers also weighed in on the subject, stating that Jocelyn’s death was necessary to raise the stakes of the show.
