Before they kidnapped his daughter, Bryan Mills had to learn those “very specific set of skills.” In the new NBC series Taken, audiences will learn how the character played by Liam Neeson became the Bryan Mills we saw in the Taken trilogy. Of course, Mills isn’t played by Neeson this time. Instead, Clive Standen takes over. The new show debuts at 10 p.m. ET on Monday, February 27 after The Voice. Read on for a preview.
Taken begins with Bryan Mills as a former Green Beret. He’s later recruited by the CIA after a personal tragedy. The CIA sees that Mills likes to help save lives, and they want to tap into that.
Strangely, Taken The Series isn’t technically a prequel and it’s not a reboot either. Standen, who is best known for his role on Vikings, is playing a younger Bryan Mills, 30 years younger than the Mills we saw in the movies. However, the show is set in the present day, so it’s not a period show.
Executive producer Luc Besson, who produced the film series, was also heavily involved in the new show. “He has steered us in a direction that I think will be loyal and faithful to his original vision in the movies, but he has not limited himself in a way,” producer Alex Cary explained to The Wrap.

As he fights to overcome the trauma of the incident and exact revenge, Mills is pulled into a career as a deadly CIA operative, a job that awakens his very particular, and very dangerous, set of skills.
