The season finale of NBC‘s Timeless aired tonight, so you will be wondering if the show is coming back for a second season. The time-travelling show starring Abigail Spencer and Matt Lanter has been renewed! The show will return in 2018, with 10 new episodes.

Deadline confirmed that Timeless was cancelled on May 10, but in a stunning decision, NBC reversed course. Three days after the show was cancelled, the network brought it back from the dead!

In an interview with TVLine, creators Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke said they didn’t think about whether the show would be renewed or not when writing the season one finale. Kripke said they wrote it as if the show was coming back so they didn’t compromise their story.

“When you write these things, you plan for success,” Kripke explained. “You just sort of have to, and whatever happens happens. But you write it as if the show’s coming back, because I think doing it any other way, you’re compromising the story you set out to tell.”

“We’ve always set out to tell this one-season story that then would provide a launching point for a Season 2, but that would answer a lot of things, and I think we did it,” Ryan told TVLine back in February. “We didn’t have any conversations where we were pulling out ratings and trying to do the math. We’re just writers, and we told the best story we could. So we’ll let the chips fall where they may.”

While Ryan and Kripe are confident in the show’s future, TVLine also notes that the show’s ratings haven’t been doing well. Since October, it’s been averaging in the 1.1 to 1.2 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. The February 3 episode also drew less than 3 million viewers. Another point going against the show is that it is expensive to produce.

Kripke told fans – dubbed “#TeamTimeless” – that they still need their help to convince NBC to renew the show.

He also tweeted this letter to fans:

Deadline reports that NBC is considered moving it to 8 p.m. on Fridays if the show gets picked up, since it is a show families can watch together.

Notably, the show also has a lawsuit hovering over it. In September, Onza Pictures sued Sony, the studio that produces Timeless, claiming that the show was ripped off from a Spanish-language show with a very similar plot. Inza also said it was in talks to make an English-language version if their show. On February 15, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a California federal judge denied a motion to have the lawsuit dismissed.

Timeless starred Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett as a group of time-travelers who have to stop criminals from ruining history. The first season ran an 16 episodes.
