Nancy Kerrigan
Famous ice-skater Nancy Kerrigan is dancing with pro Artem Chigvintsev this season and the pair are reportedly performing a Viennese Waltz on the premiere episode. Kerrigan is an Olympic figure-skater, who had a major career in the 1990s and she was known for her fashionable outfits on the ice. She is also known for the knee smash heard around the world. The Bleacher Report says that "hitman" Shane Stant, "whacked Kerrigan on the knee for $6,500 and unleashed a media firestorm and sports controversy that drew worldwide attention. His name appeared on the front page of every newspaper in the country for weeks, and then—poof—Shane Stant vanished." There were several men in on the attack, including Kerrigan's fellow skating competitor Tonya Harding and Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, who told the FBI that many ideas were tossed around, but they decided on damaging Kerrigan's "landing leg." Tonya Harding maintained that she did not know about Kerrigan's attack until after it happened, releasing the following statement at the time: Despite my mistakes and my rough edges, I have done nothing to violate the standards of excellence in sportsmanship that are expected in an Olympic athlete.
