The season 24 premiere of Dancing With the Stars is tonight and there are twelve teams competing in hopes of winning the mirrorball trophy. Twelve pros are matched with twelve celebrity contestants and each pairing comes up with a cute or catchy team name each season. Get the rundown on this season’s team names and intro videos for each contestant below.
Team Baby Got Bach
Peta Murgatroyd and Nick Viall have combined the “BACHelor” with Murgatroyd’s being a brand new mother to create their team name. Murgatroyd was a surprise to many since she just gave birth a couple months ago. On an episode of Good Morning America, she said she’s excited but also plans on taking things slow to get started. Meanwhile, Viall just finished his run as The Bachelor last week.
Team Mango Tango
Chris Kattan and pro dancer Witney Carson have clearly gone for a silly team name since Kattan is a comedian. Plus “Mango” was one of Kattan’s fictional characters on Saturday Night Live. Mango was a male exotic dancer who spoke with a Hispanic accent and often wore a pink beret on his head. For the duo’s first dance of the season, they are rumored to be using the signature song from Kattan’s movie A Night at the Roxbury.
Team Pretty XXpensive
Erika Girardi, aka Erika Jayne, is paired up with dancer Gleb Savchenko and their team name is clearly reflective of Jayne’s music career. In 2009, she came out with the song “Pretty Mess” and this year, she released her song “XXpen$ive.” Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fans even got a behind-the-scenes look at Jayne’s music video for “XXpen$ive.”
Team Golden Giggles
Olympic Gymnast Simone Biles and Sasha Farber are Team Golden Giggles. All of the photos and video of the two so far, show them laughing, smiling and having a good time, so the giggles makes sense. As for the “golden” part, it’s clearly in tribute to Biles’ many Olympic accomplishments. Last season, Farber was paired with reality star Terra Jole and they appeared to have a prank war going on. Perhaps we will see some of the same hijinks going on with Biles as well.
Team Cuchi Cuchi
Pro dancer Keo Motsepe is matched with the vivacious Charo this season and her signature phrase is “Cuchi Cuchi,” so it only makes sense that it be the couple’s team name. Charo admits that her personality is “out there” and that she’s “from another planet,” so it will be interesting to see how that plays out in the ballroom this season.
Team Lady And The Gramp
Clearly, Lindsay Arnold and baseball star David Ross’ team name is making fun of the duo’s age difference, referring to Ross as “Gramps.” Ross is the first MLB player to be a part of the Dancing With the Stars cast, so it’s exciting for Arnold. Just recently, Ross retired from playing, but he still has a career in commentary and working behind the scenes.
Team Denim N Diamonds
Sharna Burgess is paired with bull rider Bonner Bolton, so their team name shows their different backgrounds. Burgess likes glamour and Bolton is more of a cowboy. When Burgess went to meet her partner, she met him on his family’s farm and she was not dressed for the occasion. She showed up in skinny jeans and stiletto heels, which left Bolton admittedly speechless. It will be interesting to see if these two have some chemistry together in and outside the ballroom.
Team Booty and the Beast
Val Chmerkovskiy and Fifth Harmony singer Normani Kordei are officially Team Booty and the Beast. We can guess how this team name came about. Kordei is currently very busy on a world tour, so Chmerkovskiy is tagging along with her to make sure they get in enough rehearsal time for DWTS. Do you think all the traveling will take its toll on the duo?
Team Shad Squad
Rashad Jennings has earned the team name “Team Shad Squad” with dancer Emma Slater. Clearly, this is for the fans of RaSHAD. Athletes on the show have either been exceptionally talented in the ballroom or they fall flat, so it will be interesting to see which category Jennings falls into this season.
Team Maksimum Heat
Maksim Chmerkovkiy and Heather Morris are Team Maksimum Heat. The duo has faced a lot of backlash because of Morris’ professional dance background. Not only was she a backup dancer for Beyonce, she was also a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance. Some of the pro dancers on Dancing With the Stars have even been contestants on SYTYCD, so this is definitely an advantage.
Team Dancin Fools
Mr. T and Kym Herjavec’s team name “Dancin Fools” is clearly a play on Mr. T’s signature phrase, “I pity the fool.” Herjavec, formerly Johnson, is a newly wed to former celebrity DWTS partner Robert Herjavec, who she met through working with him on the show.
Team Blades of Glory
Artem Chignitsev and Nancy Kerrigan’s team name was the last one to be released online and the duo revealed the news the morning of the DWTS premiere. The Blades of Glory name is probably paying tribute to Kerrigan’s esteemed ice-skating career.
