Tonight is the season 5 finale of Chicago Fire, and fans should be happy to know that the show is coming back for a sixth season.

Season 5 of the series averaged a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49 and 7.1 million viewers, down by 12% in the demographic and total viewers, according to TV Series Finale. It is the second-highest-rated and most watched drama on the network behind This Is Us. (For comparison, Med averaged a 1.2 and 6.6 million viewers, and PD averaged a 1.4 and 6.6 million. Justice trailed behind with a 1.1 and 6.1 million viewers.)

Big changes will come with the Chicago Fire renewal. Not only is the show’s co-creator/executive producer/co-showrunner, Michael Brandt, leaving, but series’ executive producer and director Joe Chappelle will be ending his time as well. Derek Haas will take the reins as solo showrunner. According to Deadline, former Chicago Fire camera operator Reza Tabrizi, who has directed episodes of Fire and PD, may be rumored to replace Chappelle as EP.

Chicago PD and Chicago Med have both been renewed for another season. A decision has not yet been reached for Chicago Justice.

On tonight’s season finale, Gabby’s father causes tensions to rise between Casey and Dawson. In an interview with TV Guide, Taylor Kinney dished, “We have a pretty precarious incident scene that leaves the majority of Firehouse 51 in a building, in a structure fire. Dawson is outside, and the majority of us are stuck inside and doing our best to get out.” Derek Haas revealed to the outlet that some characters may be “left-hanging,” suggesting we could end the season on an anxiety-inducing cliffhanger. “It’s going to be a harrowing one… It’s a dangerous job, and as we’ve shown on the show, anytime the bells go off, it could be dangerous for anyone. I will say no one’s safe on this finale.”
