The season three finale of iZombie aired tonight, so you might be wondering if Liv Moore of the Seattle Medical Examiner’s Office is coming back to eat more brains and solve more crimes. The good news is that iZombie has already been renewed. The bad news is we have a long time to wait until the show’s fourth season premiers since The CW has held it back for midseason. Since season three didn’t start until April 2017, it’s entirely possible that season four won’t start until April 2018.

iZombie was picked up for a fourth season back in May, meaning that 11 of The CW’s 2016-2017 TV shows survived the season. The only CW shows cancelled were freshman shows No Tomorrow and Frequency. This was also The Vampire Diaries‘ final season. It’s not clear how many episodes iZombie‘s fourth season will run, but it will likely be just 13 like this past season.

In season three, Liv, Clive, Ravi, Major and Peyton faced a new villain, Vivian Stoll of the security company Filmore-Graves. Every member of the firm is a zombie and they’ve been planning for what will happen when the rest of Seattle’s human population discovers that brain-eaters walk among them.

Ravi has also developed a cure, which Blaine took, but it has a deadly side effect. It costs a zombie his or her memories. Major has been working for Filmore-Graves, since it was the only job he could find after being accused of being the Chaos Killer. But he agreed to take the cure and was fired in “Looking For Mr. Goodbrain Part 1.” In “Looking for Mr. Goodbrain Part 2,” Liv finds out about another shocking secret and Clive tries to get closure with his ex-girlfriend, FBI agent Dale Bozzio.

The season ended with the entire world learning that zombies exist in Seattle, news that shakes the series to its core. In an interview with TVGuide, co-creator Rob Thomas confirmed that there will be “brave new world” for season four.

“We’re in week two right now of breaking Season 4 and god, it’s craziness because we’re doing things like thinking, OK, what does the new justice system look like? What does the zombie prison system look like? Are there zombie-only restaurants?” Thomas told TVGuide. “It is like having to build a new world.”

The ratings for iZombie haven’t been great, but the show has a strong fanbase that watches episodes after they air. According to TVSeriesFinale, the show only averaged 871,000 total viewers through its first 12 episodes and just a 0.31 18-49 rating. Those numbers were both down 34.49 percent and 41.04 percent, respectively, from the previous season.

iZombie is very loosely based on the comic series by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. The series was developed by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright (Veronica Mars). The cast includes Rose McIver as Liv Moore, Malcolm Goodwin as Detective Clive Babineaux, Rahul Kohli as Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, Robert Buckley as Major Lilywhite, David Anders as Blaine and Aly Mchalka as Peyton Charles.
