Over the years, Spacey has asked by many media outlets about his sexuality. Having never reportedly been married, many have voiced that they believe him to be gay, but, in an old interview with Playboy, he said that he is not gay. Whatever his sexuality is, he does not believe in claiming a definition of his sexuality for the public. He chooses to keep this private even though he did joke about “coming out of the closet” during tonight’s 2017 Tony Awards while he was hosting.

In 1999, an article in the Sunday Times stated that Kevin Spacey’s “love affair with acting, and the absence of a visible partner in the life of an attractive 40-year-old, has resulted in misunderstanding and Esquire magazine’s bet-hedging assertion two years ago that he must be gay”. In response, Spacey said to Lesley White of the Sunday Times:

I chose for a long time not to answer these questions because of the manner in which they were asked, and because I was never talking to someone I trusted, so why should I? Recently I chose to participate because it’s a little hard on the people I love.

Spacey also once told Gotham Magazine that:

I’ve just never believed in pimping my personal life out for publicity. I’m not interested in doing it. Never will do it. They can gossip all they want; they can speculate all they want. I just happen to believe that there’s a public life and there’s a private life. Everybody has a right to a private life no matter what their profession is.

He also told The Daily Beast in 2010:

Look, I might have lived in England for the last several years, but I’m still an American citizen and I have not given up my right to privacy. People have different reasons for the way they live their lives. You cannot put everyone’s reasons in the same box. It’s just a line I’ve never crossed and never will … But why is it in this country that kids might think it’s OK to bully and make fun of somebody? I’ll tell you why, because what do they see in the media happening all the time? In the media they seem to think that’s OK, so if we stop using sexuality as a weapon against people, maybe everyone will eventually get cool with it.

While Spacey has stated in the past that he is not gay, openly gay TV personality Andy Cohen reportedly stated that Spacey is indeed gay. In his memoir, Cohen wrote, “I still get enraged when I think about [Spacey] talking about being in love with that woman on 60 Minutes. Come out, sir.” Even so, this is hardly solid evidence.
