Gendry on ‘Game of Thrones’: A Storyline Recap

Gendry on Game of Thrones

HBO Gendry on Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is about to premiere Season 7 on HBO and there are rumors that Gendry might come back. Since we haven’t seen Gendry for a while, a refresher on his plotline can definitely come in handy. In case you’ve forgotten some details about Gendry, here’s a look back on his storyline in Game of Thrones, especially his relationship with Arya.

We last saw Gendry in Season 3, when he was rowing out to sea. Last season, fans thought they might have caught a glimpse of him in a trailer for the “No One” episode, but they were disappointed to learn that all that speculation was wrong.

Gendry is the bastard son of King Robert Baratheon, so he could play a huge role if the showrunners ever decide to bring him back. According to the Game of Thrones wikia, his mother worked in a tavern and died when he was young. He then learned the blacksmith trade and lived in King’s Landing as an apprentice to Tobho Mott, forging armor and weapons.

In Season 1, Ned realized that Gendry was King Robert’s bastard son. After Robert died, Mott sent Gendry away to escape the purge of all of Robert’s bastard children. Gendry wanted to join the Night’s Watch, but that just wasn’t going to happen for him like it did for Jon Snow.

In Season 2, Gendry and Arya became friends. But he was still being targeted for being King Robert’s son, although he was not aware of his lineage. Gendry recognized Arya through her disguise and she swore him to secrecy. The goldcloaks captured Arya and Gendry and they were taken to Harrenhal. Gendry was put to work in the castle’s forge, and Arya arranged for Jaqen to help them escape.

In Season 3, Arya and Gendry were captured yet again, this time by the Brotherhood Without Banners. Gendry wanted to stay with the Brotherhood and this upset Arya. Gendry felt like the Brotherhood was the family he never had, but was wrong. Very wrong. They ended up turning him over to Melisandre.

Finally, thanks to Melisandre, Gendry learned his true heritage.

The bastard of Robert of the House Baratheon, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men. Why do you think the Gold Cloaks wanted you? There is power in a king’s blood.”

But she didn’t have pleasant plans for the young man. She leeched his blood in a ritual. Davos, always a man of honor, eventually freed Gendry and sent him back to King’s Landing via a rowboat. But Gendry doesn’t know how to swim, which could create a problem for him. The last time we saw him on the show, he was rowing away from Dragonstone, trying to find a way back to King’s Landing.

He’s been a running joke and meme since, with fans often joking that he’s still out there somewhere, rowing along. This is because he just hasn’t been seen anywhere. He never showed up at King’s Landing, as far as we know. There’s no telling where he actually ended up.

With so many people lining up now to claim the Iron Throne, this would be the perfect time for Gendry to reappear. He has a legitimate claim as Robert Baratheon’s son, if his line can be legitimized. But where is he? It looks like Dany might be heading to Dragonstone in the premiere, so some fans are hoping Gendry will be there, hiding out, because he never got very far. Others think he’s somewhere else, stuck halfway between King’s Landing and Dragonstone. Still others think he was reunited with the Brotherhood Without Banners, since they made an appearance again at the end of Season 6.
