Read on to learn more about Ryan and Trista.
1. Ryan Won Season 2 of the Bachelorette
Trista was the season 1 runner-up of The Bachelor, and was subsequently chosen as the network’s first bachelorette.
She chose Ryan Sutter as the winner.
On December 6, 2003, Ryan and Trista were married in a million-dollar wedding near Palm Springs, California. According to Reuters, 300 guests attended the ceremony, and some of them were Trista’s former contestants on the series.
ABC bankrolled the wedding ceremony, according to People. They report Trista as saying, “Never ever would I have been able to afford this.” She wore a Badgley Mischka gown for the wedding, while Ryan wore a tuxedo from Kenneth Cole.
Tying the knot came with its fair share of stresses. According to People, the wedding led to a lawsuit from Rehn’s former manager, “who claims she owes him a commission fee of $200,000 on the $1 million she earned from ABC for the wedding rights.”
2. The Couple Has 2 Children
In July 2007, the couple gave birth to their first child, Maxwell Alston, a baby boy born 5 lbs 3 oz. They shared in the news in February, telling People, “We are so happy after two years of trying…” Ryan added, “I am happy to be able to finally be a dad.”
In April 2009, they gave birth to their daughter, Blakesley. She was delivered by c-section and weighed 6 lbs 2 oz.
In an interview, Trista told Life & Style, “She’s healthy. Everything is really good.” A family member told the outlet that the name Blakesley is a family name that dates back to the 1700s.
3. Ryan Is a Colorado Firefighter
The couple currently lives in Eagle County, Colorado, where Ryan works as a Vail firefighter.
Trista, a former physical therapist, is a purse designer.
Ryan prepped for American Ninja Warrior with his children. In a recent interview with Too Fab, he dished:
Its kind of funny, the day after I found out I was going to be on the show, I used every opportunity to do like a pull up or like jump up onto a rock on one leg and balance it was kind of a game I would play with my kids… We would find just little things to jump on or do a pull up or a push up, or something like that. So it kind of because just like an obsessive daily focus. I was always looking for an opportunity to increase my upper body strength and balance.
4. Ryan Was Drafted in the Fifth Round of the 1998 NFL Draft
Ryan played defensive back in college on the Colorado Buffaloes football team and was drafted in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL draft.
Sutter ended up signing with the Carolina Panthers. In his first play of his first game, he injured his shoulder, forcing him to take time away from the sport, and being placed on injury reserve. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks the following summer, but was cut.
In 2000, Sutter played one season of NFL Europe, and in 2005, he was invited to a tryout for the New Orleans Saints. He suffered a knee injury.
5. Trista Suffered From a Seizure Earlier This Year
In May, Trista suffered from a seizure while vacationing with her family in Croatia.
Speaking on Good Morning America in June, Sutter said, “All I remember was feeling very dizzy and nauseous, and the next thing I knew, I was in this dream. The only way I can describe it is was like a white euphoria…”
When the incident occurred, Trista was on a tour with her husband and two children. According to ABC, she fell and landed on top of her daughter. “I heard Blakesley screaming, ‘Mommy, Mommy,” Ryan recalled on Good Morning America. “Trista had fallen onto Blakesley in a sort of convulsive state.”
Ryan is a trained EMT, and did what he could before his wife was taken to the hospital. Doctors reportedly were not able to find anything conclusively wrong.
