Sam Sherpard, a playwright, director and actor, passed away on Sunday July 30, having been involved with a battle with ALS. In losing Shepard, the world losses a unique voice and an artist who came of age writing and acting in the vibrant and experimental New York City theater scene in the 1960’s.

Shepard wrote 44 plays over the course of his career, starting in 1964 and going all the way to 2013. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for Buried Child and the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award as a “master American dramatist: in 2009.

In 1980, New York magazine said Shepard was “the greatest American playwright of his generation.” Shepard’s plays are thought-evoking, bleak and honest; sparse by design and toy with elements of surrealism and absurdism.
