Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland and Zendaya Coleman sparked rumors that they are dating while on the promotional campaign for their movie. They aren’t dating, but their close relationship hasn’t stopped anyone from asking.
Homecoming is the 20-year-old Zendaya’s first feature film, and she plays Michelle Jones (not Mary Jane Watson). She’s best known for starring on the Disney Channel shows Shake It Up! and K.C. Undercover, as well as the Disney TV movie Zapped. She’ll next be seen in Hugh Jackman’s The Greatest Show on Earth.
As for the 21-year-old Holland, he previously played Spider-Man/Peter Parker in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. His other credits include Wolf Hall, The Lost City of Z, In The Heart of the Sea and The Impossible. He also starred in Billy Elliot on the stage.
Here’s a look at their relationship history.
1. Holland & Zendaya Confirmed They’re Not Dating With a Back & Forth Twitter Conversation
Holland and Zendaya responded to rumors last month that they were dating with a funny back-and-forth Twitter conversation on June 14 that played out in public.
Zendaya took the bait, continuing the discussion on Twitter. “I really can’t stand him,” she tweeted.
“Apart from when you want a part in Spiderman 2,” Holland replied.
“Watch yourself, I still have more followers than you right now…tread lightly my freind…tread lightly,” Zendaya responded.
When someone suggested that their Twitter “fight” was evidence of a “sweet romance” cooking between them, Zendaya shut it down. “Right, cause nothing says ‘sweet romance’ like dragging each other for filth on twitter,” she wrote.
2. A Tabloid Rumor Claimed Holland Moved Into Zendaya’s Los Angeles Home
A rumor from the British tabloid The Mirror claimed that Holland was seen moving into Zendaya’s Los Angeles home. Her friends were “confident” that the two friends were in a “hot relationship.”
“He’s smitten with her and lives at her new mansion in LA when he’s there, which is a lot. They are definitely heating up,” a source claimed. “He’s had a crush on her since filming. Now they’re together he’s busting to tell everyone but she wants to keep it quiet for now.”
The Mirror’s sources even claimed that Holland was visited Zendaya on the set of K.C. Undercover.
Another tabloid, Life & Style, claimed that Holland “has barely left her side.”
3. Holland & Zendaya Both Appeared on Spike’s ‘Lip Sync Battle’ to Promote ‘Homecoming’
On July 5, Holland and Zendaya appeared in an episode of Spike TV’s Lip Sync Battle. Since the show, based on the popular Jimmy Fallon skit, has become so popular, stars usually stop by to promote their latest projects. The show is hosted by LL Cool J and Chrissy Tiegen.
In the episode, Holland was featured “performing” to Rihanna’s “Umbrella.”
Holland really dedicates himself to the performance. He’s wearing an outfit that’s as difficult to wear as his Spidey outfit. In an interview with Short List, Holland said he only wears a thong under the Spider-Man outfit.
“You have to completely disrobe and then put a dressing gown on, but they’re very comfy ones, you can’t walk around in just a thong, can you imagine?” Holland told Short List. “And then you race across the lot to the toilet, then come back, get back into it – it’s such a mission.”
4. Holland Previously Dated Elle Lotherington & Was Linked to Ella Purnell
In February, Holland was linked to actress Ella Purnell after they were seen together at the BAFTA Awards. The Sun reported that the two were went back to his hotel room together at the Dorchester Hotel in London for an after-party. They were also at Harvey Weinstein’s Rosewood Hotel party together.
“Tom and Ella were very close inside the Weinstein party and it looked really obvious that he was taken by her,” a source told the Sun. “He was out for a huge night and was leading her around the dance floor by the hand. He had loads of people around him, even his mum Nicola Frost, and at one point FaceTimed his friends from inside the venue. Tom and Ella went back to the Dorchester in separate cars. Tom had a room there and she didn’t.”
Purnell starred in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and Kick-Ass 2.
Holland was previously in a long-term relationship with Elle Lotherington, an assistant director. The couple shared photos of each other together on Instagram in 2015, but they were deleted. Lotherington has an Instagram page here.
5. Zendaya Says She had a ‘Bad Breakup’ in 2016, but Didn’t Say Who the Man Was
In January, Zendaya used her app to tell fans that she survived a “bad” breakup in 2016, but she never said who the man was. According to the Daily Mail, Zendaya explained how she got over the break-up.
“I started forcing myself to have a lot more fun. I tried new things – going out and just doing more stuff. A healthy relationship does not mean you need to be with that person 24/7,” she wrote. “I got rid of old text messages, pictures and their clothing I still had. You don’t hang on to old Band-Aids. Throw that in the trash!”
She suggested to her fans that you have to get rid of everything you associate with the person you broke-up with to move on. “Or if you can’t quite let go, at least change the title of their name in your phone,” she wrote.
Last year, there were rumors that Zendaya was dating New York Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. after they were seen together at the 2016 Grammys. She told Extra that she didn’t even go to the awards show with him. They just happened to meet there!
