SYNOPSIS: “In 1991, Princess Diana recorded interviews about her life. This is her side of the story.”

There aren’t enough clips to make up the entirety of the 90-minute documentary, but the tapes will serve as a through line of sorts. The Radio Times reports that they were recorded at Kensington Palace by Peter Settelen in 1992 and 1993, and have garnered a great deal of attention since they were discovered. The recordings– and their use– have been the center of a number of legal battles.

Channel 4 has defended its use of the tapes. The Radio Times reports, “Channel 4 insist that the tapes are a valid public document which show the spontaneity and charm of the princess in unguarded moments. They believe that the 20th anniversary of her death on 31st August 1997 is an important landmark and sources point to the candid interviews given by Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry, to ITV.”

Diana: In Her Own Words marks the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, and will explore a variety of personal issues the Princess faced. According to the Daily Herald, Diana will discuss bulimia, her husband’s relationship with Camilla, and the stress she faced when it came to dealing with the press.

Be sure to check out the film tonight, on National Geographic, at 9pm ET/PT.
