Gendry was ecstatic to see Jon Snow. Rather than hiding who he was, like Davos suggested, he immediately revealed his identity.

Why did Gendry do that? Because he remembered that Jon’s dad Ned Stark and his dad Robert Baratheon had been best friends. So why can’t Jon and Gendry be buddies too?
Jon certainly seemed open to the idea. And a fandom of memes was born.
