SEGA® Europe Ltd., and SEGA® of America, Inc. in collaboration with Disney Interactive today announced the upcoming digital release of Castle of Illusion featuring Mickey Mouse™, a complete re-imagining of the iconic Mega Drive/Genesis side-scrolling adventure first released in 1990. Developed by Sega Studios Australia, Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will be available worldwide for digital download on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for Xbox 360®, PlayStation®Network and Windows PC in summer 2013.

Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse first debuted on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1990 to critical acclaim. Excellent controls, music, and graphics helped to bring the magic of Disney to millions of SEGA fans around the world. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will continue this tradition. Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Castle of Illusion has stunning visuals and new gameplay mechanics. Fans will enjoy the original storyline as they help Mickey save Minnie from the evil witch, Mizrabel.

“The original Castle of Illusion was tremendously entertaining and has a well-deserved reputation as a SEGA classic. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse brings this great game to a new generation,” said Chris Olson, vice president of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “Mickey is back and he looks fantastic.”

It turns out that video game developer DreamRift was originally slated to develop this HD remake. Peter Ong, the creative director for DreamRift, revealed this news to Game Informer:

While DreamRift feels absolutely honored in having had the opportunity to carry the events of Castle of Illusion forward with [Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion], I must admit that I’m particularly jealous of the upcoming remake… for a very good reason. When DreamRift had just started working on Power of Illusion, Disney asked us to do the Castle of Illusion remake as well, but we had to decline due to not having resources at the time to take on another game concurrently. It was truly one of the most agonizing moments of my life! However, my dismay turned into excitement when I found out soon after that development of the remake would be handled by Sega. With Sega being the company responsible for making the first Castle of Illusion, I’m sure that the game is in very competent hands, and we’re all in for a real treat.

This isn’t the only Disney HD video game coming out in 2013. Check out the above trailer for DuckTales Remastered, which is being handled by Capcom. The game will release digitally on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Wii U’s eShop this summer.
