UPDATE: It took a few days, but it has finally been confirmed that Togepi can indeed be evolved into Togetic. The first known instance of the Pokemon appearing in the game was posted on Reddit by user ReversalOnYouTube:
Togepi has been added to Pokemon Go. This addition came on December 12th, with Niantic introducing a variety of baby Pokemon to the game as a way of slowly bringing in additional creatures. Thus far, only a handful of new Pokemon are actually out there. But if Togepi is in the game, doesn’t that mean that Togetic is now in the game, too? Can you evolve Togepi?
Well, it looks like the answer to that question can be found in Niantic’s announcement of the new Pokemon, which was posted to their YouTube channel yesterday. The Togepi screen can briefly be seen, and there is clearly an “evolve” button there, with 50 candies being required.
Assuming you really can evolve Togepi and this screenshot from Niantic isn’t inaccurate, this would make Togetic the only non-baby Pokemon to be added to the game this week. Togetic is a flying and fairy type.
Thus far, no one has been able to actually confirm that Togepi can be evolved simply because doing so is going to take quite a lot of time and effort, and the new Pokemon have been in the game for less than 24 hours. Part of the reason it’s such a difficult task is because Togepi can only hatch from an egg that was obtained on December 12th or later, meaning eggs already in your inventory and in progress by the time the update came about are not eligible.
Then, once you’ve made room in your inventory and have obtained a new egg, you’ll have to walk several kilometers and just hope you’re lucky enough to hatch a Togepi, which is not at all a guarantee. This is just step one, because you then need to get yourself 50 Togepi candies. Hatching a 5km egg nets you 20 candy, and so assuming Togepi comes from a 5km egg, you’ll need to hatch it at least three separate times in order to have enough candy for an evolution.
Naturally, nobody has had enough time to do that yet, and it will likely take several days before we start getting confirmation that Togetic is in the game. The video from Niantic is solid evidence that it has indeed been introduced, but keep in mind that what’s shown in Niantic’s videos is not always 100 percent accurate. Even just in that screenshot above, you’ll notice that the device pictured is running iOS even though it very clearly is not an iPhone.
At this time, it’s believed that the new Pokemon that were added on December 12th are Togepi, Pichu, Igglybuff, Cleffa, Smoochum, Elekid, and Magby. It’s possible that there are more in the game, including Togetic, but those seven are the only ones that players have actually been able to confirm.
As is the case any time an update is released for Pokemon Go, Niantic has provided very little information, and so it’s the fan community’s job to start hunting for answers. Check back in later this week for more information concerning Togetic.
