A special event has just been announced for Pokemon Go to celebrate Pokemon Day. What and when is Pokemon Day, exactly?

Pokemon Day takes place every year on February 27th, which is the date that the very first Pokemon game, Pocket Monsters Aka and Pocket Monsters Midori, was released in Japan in 1996. This is the game that was later released in North America on September 28th, 1998 as Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue.

February 27th, 2017 is therefore the 21st anniversary of the Pokemon franchise. Last year’s Pokemon Day event was a much bigger deal, as it was the 20th anniversary of Pokemon. A celebration was held at the Nintendo store at Rockefeller Center in New York City, and there was also a day of events being broadcast on the Pokemon Twitch stream.

In Pokemon Go, to celebrate Pokemon Day this year, any Pikachu that players encounter will be wearing a festive hat. This will actually last for several days before and after Pokemon Day itself, as the event begins on February 26th and ends on March 6th.

As was the case last year, there will also be a special Pokemon Day Twitch stream taking place on February 27th on the Pokemon Twitch stream. According to Pokemon.com, this stream will include “many of the most memorable matches from the Pokémon TCG, video games, and Pokkén Tournament from the past several years.”

In addition, on February 27th, some new Pokemon figures will be released, and there will be a Pokemon movie marathon on Pokemon TV.
