A special Easter event is about to begin in Pokemon Go.

An Easter event has begun in Pokemon Go.

This is another holiday spectacular in the free-to-play mobile game, and Niantic is referring to it as an “Eggstravaganza.” There had previously been events for World Water Day, Valentine’s Day, New Year’s, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Halloween.

Here’s everything you need to know about the ongoing Pokemon Go Easter event.

1. It Begins on April 13th & Ends on April 20th

The Pokemon Go Easter event got started on Thursday afternoon.

The Easter event officially commenced at 1:00 p.m. PDT on Thursday, April 13th, about seven hours after the initial announcement. According to Niantic, the event will last for exactly one week, ending at 1:00 p.m. PDT on Thursday, April 20th.

You can use this website to see what 1:00 p.m. PDT translates into in your time zone.

Niantic tends to like starting their holiday events a few days ahead of the holiday itself and then having the event last for one week. This event is clearly being held to commemorate Easter, though it also takes place during Passover, which started on April 10th and ends on April 18th.

2. 10km & 5km Pokemon Can Now Be Hatched From 2km Eggs

During the Easter event, you can hatch rarer Pokemon much faster than usual.

That’s because certain Pokemon that normally can only hatch from 10km eggs and 5km eggs will for the next week be available in 2km eggs.

Based on early reports from players around the world, it seems that quite a substantial number of rare Pokemon have been added into the 2km egg pool. In fact, it may be the case that every single hatchable Pokemon can now hatch from 2km eggs, though this has not yet been confirmed.

So far, here are all of the Pokemon that we now know for sure hatch from 2km eggs when they didn’t before:

  • Aerodactyl
  • Dunsparce
  • Elekid
  • Grimer
  • Growlith
  • Koffing
  • Lapras
  • Larvitar
  • Lickitung
  • Magby
  • Miltank
  • Onix
  • Phanpy
  • Shellder
  • Shuckle
  • Smoochum
  • Sneasel
  • Stantler
  • Sudowoodo
  • Tangela
  • Tyrogue
  • Wobbuffet
  • Wooper

In addition, generation two starters can be hatched from 5km eggs.

3. These Changes Only Apply to New Eggs

It’s important to note that the egg changes detailed above only apply to eggs that you obtain after the Easter event begins.

That’s because in Pokemon Go, the game determines what’s in an egg the moment you pick the egg up, not the moment it hatches. Therefore, any eggs that you obtained prior to the afternoon of April 13th will not be affected by the Easter event, even if you hatch them during the event week.

However, that also means that any eggs you obtain during the next week will be affected by the Easter event, even if you hatch them after the event week.

You can tell if an egg is affected by these changes by heading over to the egg itself and looking at the date that you obtained it. If you picked the egg up between April 13th and April 20th, that means this egg is subject to the Easter changes. If you picked it up at any other date, it won’t be subject to the changes.

4. There Will Be Double XP All Week

Another one of the benefits of the Easter event is the fact that there will be double XP all week.

This double XP bonus will make it easier to level up quickly. Lucky Eggs are items that give you double XP for a 30 minute window, and so if you make use of a Lucky Egg this week, that means you’ll be getting four times the XP as usual during that half-hour.

Niantic is clearly aware that players will want to utilize this trick, as Lucky Eggs are half price in the store this week. You can also simply obtain these items by leveling up, though they are only given out at certain levels.

5. You Will Receive More Candy From Hatching Eggs

Finally, the last bonus of the week is that players will receive additional candy every time they hatch an egg.

However, Niantic has not actually clarified how significant the bonus is. A lot of players just assumed it was double candy, but in their announcement, Niantic simply stated that “you’ll also earn more Candy for every Egg you hatch.”

So far, it seems that you will receive bonus candy from 2km, 5km, and 10km eggs, not just 2km ones.
