WWE 2K18’s Soundtrack is *Weird*

WWE 2k18 Full Sountrack 2K Games

WWE video games have a history of off beat menu music. From WWE No Mercy’s infamously catchy ‘yo diggity dog’ song, to Zack Ryder’s opening ‘Woo Woo Woo!’ embarrassing players worldwide, making a soundtrack that appeals to the WWE Universe is challenging.

This year, the WWE enlisted a world-famous Rock star to curate the soundtrack. Literally. The Rock put together the soundtrack.

This is actually a trend at 2K games, as Jay-Z handled the duties on NBA 2K13, and LeBron James on NBA 2K14, and Puff Daddy on WWE 2K17.

How does The Rock’s soundtrack fair? Well, it’s unique that’s for sure. With artists ranging from The Blues Brothers, to Kayne West, to Kid Rock, to Easy-E to *two* Tech N9ne songs, the WWE 2K18 soundtrack is, frankly, weird.

Puff Daddy’s soundtrack featured popular songs, namely ‘Paranoid’ by Black Sabbath, and his own ‘Bad Boy for Life’, but about half of WWE 2K18’s soundtrack are notable and popular songs – and seem to speak to The Rocks mentality. You can absolutely see Mr. Dwayne Johnson rolling through Miami blasting these songs. The music feels, for better-or-worse, distinctly ‘him’.

How you feel about Boston and The Blues Brothers being in a sport video game released in 2018 is up to you. But when you consider the primary audience of the WWE these days, you have to wonder if kids across the globe are going to find a new love for some old songs, or simply mute it and put on a podcast

A curious note is the censoring of some of the songs – references to Marijuana and getting high are left in, but anything resembling a swearword is out, which is a fair trade off. ‘You Never Met a White Boy Quite Like Me’ is at least gracious enough to replace the bleeped parts with sound effects.
