The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild

Nintendo

The Nintendo Switch may be the newest console on the block, but it’s already delivering some of the best games this generation. While the library of games is not nearly as robust as PS4 or Xbox One, Nintendo’s system delivers quality products. If you are looking to pick up a new Switch game for Christmas here our top 5 suggestions. However, first let’s go over some honorable mentions that deserve some love too.

Honorable Mentions

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Shovel Knight
  • Sonic Mania
  • The Binding of Issac: Rebirth
  • Doom

When deciding upon our main choices we focused on titles that offered strong replayability, a compelling story, and engaging gameplay. We did not aim to include every genre or age restriction, though only one of these choices is rated M for Mature. These are simply the best titles on the Nintendo Switch that everyone should own.

  1. 1. Super Mario Odyessy

  1. Super Mario Odyessy is the newest game for the Nintendo Switch and already it’s considered by many to be one of the best Mario games ever released. The story once again revolves around Mario attempting to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. Odyessy’s twist is Mario discovers a sentient ghost hat that lets him possess various enemies and objects around the world. This creates a plethora of unique and sometimes challenging puzzles that players will need to overcome. Levels are vibrant and incredibly memorable thanks to their layout and subversion of typical Nintendo map tropes

Odyessy also offers tight gameplay and sports a solid movement system that’s perfect for experimentation. Music is absolutely stellar with jazzy, catchy tunes making up the majority of the main tracks. Super Mario Odyessy is a game that should not be missed by anyone who owns a Switch.

2. ARMS

There are a lot of different fighting games out there, but ARMS is a unique beast. Instead of fighting on a 2D plane, players navigate their colorful fights around an area. Every combatant possesses extendable arms that allow them to strike foes from across the stage. This crafts a unique pacing that allows skilled fighters to strike foes without them even knowing where it came from. All of the fighters have their pros and cons, as well as various types of gloves they can use. ARMS’ motion controls are also precise and work smoothly both on and offline. Despite other titles overshadowing this game, ARMS is still a blast to play.

3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Bethesda’s iconic RPG has finally made its way to the Nintendo Switch, making it one of the biggest 3rd party games on this console.  Offering only the vanilla version of Skyrim, players can fully explore every village, slay every monster, and visit all of the dungeons scattered across the mountainous terrain. Combat is fluid and there are even motion controls for those who want to experience this game differently. There is also amiibo support in the form of special The Legend of Zelda gear and the game runs consistently with no real performance issues. Keep in mind there is no DLC included with this version of Skyrim, so you’ll only have the base title to enjoy.

4. Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2 is one of the most unique multiplayer focused titles to release this year. Users once again create their own Squid/Kid hybrid and battle it out across a variety of wacky stages. Instead of simply focusing on kills, players need to cover the various stages with ink fired from their guns. At the end of the round whichever team has inked the most territory will win. To help players accomplish this task, Splatoon 2 has a massive roster of weapons, gadgets, and abilities for players to utilize.

There are also additional game modes that will test your team’s skill and coordination. Outside of the multiplayer Splatoon 2 sports a single player mode and a seriously addictive co-op mode called “Salmon Run.” Splatoon 2 offers players a wealth of additional content to enjoy thanks to consistent, free updates to the multiplayer. If you’re looking to play online then Splatoon 2 is the best option for the Nintendo Switch.

5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The key launch game for the Nintendo Switch is also the best title on the entire system. This open world RPG/Adventure game lets users explore the vast lands of Hyrule. Taking on the forces of evil, players once again assume the role of Link in this story. While the main campaign is enjoyable, the real fun comes from exploring the truly awe-inspiring lands of Hyrule and uncovering the many secrets hidden within. This is a dangerous world that offers a staggering amount of side quest to complete, hidden puzzle dungeons to finish, and tons of enemies to slay.

Characters are well developed and memorable, with Breath of the Wild acting as the first core Zelda game to have voice acting. Visually this title is stunning thanks to the superb use of colors and art direction. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game that needs to be experienced by anyone who is a fan of video games. It pushes the boundaries of the genre and has crafted one of the single most memorable games of this generation.
