What’s New In Games This Week

There’s a little bit of everything for everyone this week. Looking for a classic reborn? Check. Looking for a returning face in a slightly different setting? Check. Searching for what might be the new hot thing in action games? Check…

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D

It’s one of the finest hours ever for the 3DS. The pinnacle of the Metal Gear franchise has been made portable, which is cause enough already for celebration. But unlike most remakes for the platform thus far, and most original games for that matter that have mostly featured large, chunky objects throw in your face, Snake Eater 3D is all about breathing life into the beautiful (but deadly) jungle, one blade of grass at a time. An already engrossing game has never looked better, nor played as well either. Though word on the street is that the extra circle pad is somewhat of a necessity once again. Nothing’s perfect I suppose. 3DS

Alan Wake's American Nightmare

For fans of the best selling author turned victim of otherworldly dangers via his typewriter, he’s back in yet another Xbox Live Arcade exclusive. But instead of being a sequel to his previous outing, it’s simply yet another tale that has no real connection to the previous one, though the similarities still exist. This time around Alan’s stuck in a story that he penned early in his career for the show Night Springs, a show that helped to jump-start his career. Though his evil doppelganger from his previous adventure apparently makes a guest starring appearance as well. Since American Nightmare is a stand-alone XBLA title, don’t expect anything to be on the scale of the previous release. Instead, view it as a prime-time special; if the ratings are strong enough, perhaps we’ll be seeing more of Mr. Wake? Xbox 360

Asura's Wrath

In a nutshell, Asura’s Wrath is basically Japan’s take on God of War, i.e. it stars a deity whose prowess on the battlefield earns him fear and respect among puny humans, but his immortal cohorts? Not so much. The precise details behind his mission, which is motivated by revenge and fueled by madness is perhaps not all that important. Though it’s worth nothing that the seven who were buds at one point have now become his targets. In that sense, it somewhat sounds like a Tarantino flick, think Kill Bill. Though Capcom stresses that it’s more anime-like then anything, with each target given its own “episode.” Helping to push this notion is how the game was developed by CyberConnect2, which is mostly known for their top-notch Naruto titles. 2012 just got its very first, over the top, God on God violence action spectacular!
