Top 15 Best LED Grow Lights: The Heavy Power List

best led light, cannabis, weed, hydroponics, gardening, led grow light

LED grow lights are a hot topic among hydroponic gardening enthusiasts. LEDs are an efficient and effective solution for hydroponic lighting, and can end up saving growers hundreds or even thousands of dollars in energy costs over the years. This article includes our favorite LED light brands and their products, including individual bulbs as well as larger panels. Whether you are a hobbyist with a small vegetable garden, or a professional grower with an entire greenhouse, you will find LEDs in this list to meet your needs.

Why Switch to LED Lighting? In the past, hydroponic gardeners depended mostly on High Intensity Discharge or HID lights, including both Metal Halide (MH), and High Pressure Sodium (HPS). HID lights are incredibly effective for growing all types of plants because they emit light in the right spectrum for plants in both flowering/fruiting and vegetative stages of growth, and they are powerful enough to provide light for large gardens. HID lighting setups cost a log of money up front and to maintain. HIDs require a separate ballast, which regulates the voltage to the light bulb. They also put out a significant amount of heat, so reflectors and inline fans are an added cost, not to mention the extra electricity usage that is wasted in the form of heat. Add that with the fact that you must replace HID light bulbs every two years or more, and you end up with an extremely expensive lighting system.

Watch a video about the benefits of switching from HID to LED lighting here.

Some growers also choose to use fluorescent or CFL lighting in their grow ops. CFL is much more efficient than HID, but the lights are not very powerful. This kind of lighting is best for very small gardens, or for short term use such as growing seedlings or clones.

The Benefits of LED Lighting: LED lights are relatively new on the market, having been around for just over a decade, but they are quickly becoming the industry standard for hobbyists as well as professional growers. LEDs are super efficient when compared to HID and even CFL lights. They emit almost no heat, which means no wasted energy, even though they are as powerful as the competition in terms of light output. This means that your grow room stays much cooler, reducing the need for inline fans or other ventilation. Less heat also reduces the amount of water evaporation. This of course reduces the cost and frequency of watering, but also makes it much easier to regulate humidity levels in your garden.

Usually you will find LED grow lights that have a combination of red and blue lights, sometimes yellow as well as Ultraviolet and Infared depending on the size and cost of the light. Flowering and fruiting plants require a slightly different light spectrum for their flowering vs. vegetative stages of growth. Some of the more sophisticated LED panels have an easy access switch that allows you to select the color ratio depending on what stage your plants are in. If you are growing herbs or lettuces, this added feature is not necessary.

Choosing the Right LED Lights For Your Garden: Overall, we find LEDs to be a cost effective solution to hydroponic gardens of all sizes. They are much more efficient in their electricity use and the bulbs last two to four times longer than other kinds of lighting, so even though LED lights may cost more upfront they can end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.

When choosing an LED grow light, you have to consider a lot of factors, including the size of the plants you are growing, how much room you have for your indoor garden and how much you are willing to spend. We’ve narrowed it down to the top 20 best LED grow lights for any set up, small or large.

If you are looking for an LED grow light for cannabis, you may want to check out our article on the Top 10 Best LED Grow Lights for Growing Cannabis. Many of the lights on this page are not suitable for cannabis grow ops, either because they are not powerful enough or because they do not offer a full spectrum of lighting for all stages of growth.

  1. Nice evaluation! We definitely found similar results with the California Light Works Solar Storm, though I realize the upfront cost of this light may be prohibitive for some folks. Saw you recommended the Advanced Platinum P150 — this was our pick for an entry level (< $250) LED Grow light. One worth taking a look at that wasn't found on this list is the sister light to the P150; we found the Advanced Platinum P300 really effective, and its switchable dual light spectrum is really a nice feature for the price. Check it out for sure!

  2. Are you looking for the best LED Grow Light 2015? As the title recommends, grow lights are electrical lighting sources which help in growth of plants by aiding the process of photosynthesis.

  3. Good site this. It’s good that you included the Amazon ratings count below the products. This helps users like me, who are in a hurry, to choose products.

  4. Your post regarding top ten led grow light is very informative, i liked the “Black Dog BDmicro-U Universal Series LED Grow Light”it looks movable and nice.

    • I purchased one of their PhytoMax 400’s. Its amazing! The healthiest and fullest plants I’ve ever seen in 20 years of gardening!

  6. Hi!

  7. This is the perfect web site for anybody who would like to find out about this topic.
You know a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I actually would want to…HaHa).

You definitely put a brand new spin on a subject that
has been written about for years. Wonderful stuff, just wonderful!

  8. This is an interesting list… I was hoping you could compare more accurately based on true wattage pulled vs actual usable spectrum for PLANTS. After all, that is why we would buy any LED Grow Light right? Objective – reduce electric consumption while giving more actual usable light – right?

  9. This article was written in 2015, yet it doesn’t include the 2014 and 2015 LED grow light of both those years. KIND grow lights started in 2013 and boasts the award for both years, however was excluded from your list. I also noticed that you failed to mention the flip 720 from cabinet grow. These are the game changers and you left them both out. KIND XL series are the #1 LED grow lights hands down. Full spectrum (12), 3w and 5w diodes, 3 year warranty, 90 DAY MBG, largest foot print in the industry, it even comes with a remote instead of switches or nobbs. I don’t work for them or anything, I just did my research. #2 would be Advanced Diamond series (excellent, but not quite there, again nobbs on top on the unit not good). Cabinet grows flip 720 (5 watt diodes) runs a little hot and buttons to switch from veg to bloom on top. They are all great products for the inside gardener and the advancement of horticultural lighting, none the less.

  10. Canadian manufactured LED Grow light company about to Launch in the very near future, so hold on, wait to see the best quality possible with low heat dissipation, therefore no fans required and even longer life of the fixture, 125 lumens vs other companies at 109 lumens, waterproof sealed units, light weight, no color shifting, I’m going to stop here and i will be back when our website is up and running. You’ll be impressed with the final product and price! USA will love the price even more because of our Loonie ! Take care for now. Looking forward to the Future of LED Lighting at it’s Best !

  11. Who ever wrote this list doesn’t understand led grow tech. NOT ONE of the lights mentioned would be in top 5. Maybe solar storm in top ten only because the use osram less. The rest is trash. Black dog is made by a manufacturing company same as Mars same housing ,they are both garbage. Why not use any biotechnology companies, vertical farming led corps ? This will help for next time. Fluence bioengineering, illumitex, lumigrow, just to name a few that crush all ten you named..

  12. I like the old Mars hydro 300 watt lights have flowered they do OK. I stick with the hid becuase i wate the money having tob heat the room in the winter anyways but cheap great light for veg. Don’t run more than 18 hours or so or leds fail. BUT they are dirt cheap 140 watts at the plug. And there found 2 in a pack for 140 less than 2 hortilux bulbs.

  13. This is a review of the cheap hobby LED grow lights ONLY. Why not review any of the commercial lights – Fluence, BIOS, Heliospectra, etc.? This review is a big joke. Why inconsistent data? Your pros and cons should have the same for every light so people can accurately compare. For example sometimes you include warranty info…sometimes not. I already know the answer – you simply reported the info on the box..huh? Christie why did you waste your time? To the rest Christie is part of the “black eye” problem of LEDs.

  14. So the best led light for growing that is out there isn’t worth a mentioning? Heliospectra is winning award after award for their light and you recommend some cheap shit to growers instead? Come on.

  15. Morsen full spectrum lights are garbage, way too much red in the light, my mother’s are tripping. Garbage product from a garbage company run by garbage people.

  16. Try black diamond perfect sun 500 , it’s crazy powerful, draws 210 watts , I had mine too close from the get go , so plants got light fatigue so follow what the sight says about distance to canopy 3-4 plants it’s a good buy , soo strong not like other led lights it’s a different animal , best led I’ve used nodes as close as the thickness of a leaf stem , creates heat but the light is a good colour to see problems , I had to import it from the states cost £371 lamp an £17 import tax , fill a metre square FOLLOW light heights for each stage . No good in low environment as soo bright unless you want small plants , 18inch in flower no more , beware
